SYLVIA BOWERS April 1, 1912 February 12, 2013 After a long and full life Sylvia passed away on February 12, 2013. She was born in East Grinstead, England, the only child of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Wilmer. Sylvia had many fond memories growing up as a child in England. She also survived the bombings there during the Second World War. She was buried alive for three days under the rubble of the building she worked in. Her fierce resolve and endurance helped maintain her until rescue arrived. In England she met and married Victor Bowers and came to Canada as a war bride after the Second World War. Originally relocated to western Ontario, she spent the majority of her life in Amaranth, MB. Sylvia was very involved in the community, holding several administrative positions. She was a member and president of the Langruth Legion Ladies Auxiliary. She was part of the Amaranth Woman's Institute for many years. She served as the secretary of the UVD council of Amaranth. She also belonged to the warbride committee. Sylvia was also an educator, and taught on the Sandy Bay Reserve, and as a substitute at Amaranth schools. Sylvia enjoyed life and had many pastimes. She took pleasure in the raising and breeding of dogs. Fritz, a Doberman, won the Best of Breed award at the 1952 Greater Winnipeg Ladies' Kennel Club. McNabb, her beloved Scottish terrier, was often by her side. She loved knitting, and her blankets won awards at the Amaranth fairs. She played piano and organ for many local weddings and funerals, and for the United Church services. She spent endless hours maintaining and taking pride in her English garden. She is predeceased by her parents; her husband Victor and her son Albert. She is survived by Albert's children Trevor (Erin), Tristen (Heather) and Troy (Vanessa) as well as her five great-grandchildren Leah, Brielle, Colin, Adriana and Alyxa. The family would like to extend our thanks to the individuals at Extendicare Tuxedovilla who made the extra effort to make Sylvia's final years pleasant and comfortable. The family would also like to thank Jeannie Elke of Amaranth and Helen Wyszynski of Winnipeg who took Sylvia into their hearts and cared for her in the later years. As per Sylvia's wishes, an Anglican Funeral Service will be held in the Grace Lutheran Church, Langruth on Saturday, February 16, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. with viewing taking place one hour prior to the service. Interment to follow at Langruth Cemetery. Clarke's Funeral Home, Gladstone in care of arrangements. www.clarkesfuneralhome.com

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • I knew Mrs Bowers from the year I joined the Langruth Auxiliary to the Legion and we worked together at so many events raising money for the Auxiliary. She and her husband were great friends of my father and mother-in-law. so we saw a lot of them socially as well. I so liked and admired her - always looking to do things in a more constructive way and persuading all of us the "new way" was worth the effort - and it usually was!! I felt so badly when she lost her eyesight but she never complained to me and always recognized my voice. The world was a better place because she was in it. She contributed so much to it and lived such a long and eventful life. My deepest sympathies to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. - Posted by: Margaret Wilson (formerly of Langruthe,Manitoba) (friend) on: Feb 19, 2013

  • Sylvia and Vic were friends of my parents (Winnipeg) and I used to go up to Amaranth and spend a lot of time at their home and they were very good to me. Sylvia introduced me to the organ and I have gone on to study that instrument and play in church for 54 years thanks to her encouragement. A very fine lady. Thanks Sylvia for all you have done for me. Love, Ken - Posted by: Ken Little (Friend) on: Feb 16, 2013
