BERNARD SHORT February 15, 1923 - February 6, 2013 We regret to announce the sudden passing of Bernard Short, February 6, 2013 at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria, B.C., nine days short of his 90th birthday. He is survived by his brother, Dr. Frank Short (Doreen) of Winnipeg, nephew Dr. Howard Short (Heather), great-niece Hannah and great-nephew Chandler, all of San Diego, California and niece Dr. Erin Short, great-nephew Jessie of Victoria, B.C. Bernard was predeceased by his father Sam Short and mother Eva Short. Bernard was born in Winnipeg and attended Winnipeg public schools and the University of Manitoba. He graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering from McGill University in 1945 and a Masters Degree in Engineering from McGill in 1960. He was employed by Canadair in Montreal 1945 - 47 and Northern Electric (Nortel) 1947 - 55. He became a Professor of Engineering at McGill University where he taught from 1955 - 67. He was an exchange professor at the University of the West Indies in Trinidad 1967-69. He left teaching and started a printing business in Montreal in 1970 and retired in 1978. In 1987 he moved to Victoria, B.C. Bernard possessed a beautiful bass voice which he displayed when he played the lead role in the Mikado at the St. Lambert Opera Co. in Montreal. He was an avid bridge player (Grand Master) and exhibited his singing talent by giving a concert at the Victoria Bridge Club at the age of 80. In March 2012, he moved into the Victoria Central Care Lodge where he resided at the time of his death. His quiet and pleasant manner and possessor of so much knowledge will be missed by everyone who knew him. At his request, he was cremated at Hatley Memorial Gardens, Victoria, B.C. on Friday, February 8, 2013.
