JOSEPH PAUL HOTZ Joseph Paul Hotz passed away suddenly at Seven Oaks Hospital on February 18, 2013. Joe is survived by son Ken, daughter Karen, son-in-law Carmine, grandchildren Emma, Gabriella, Paolo and Mia, daughter Christine, sister Evelyn, mother-in-law Katherine, and several nieces, nephews and brothers and sisters-in-law. He was predeceased by Maria, his wife of 37 years, parents Paul and Frances, brothers Carl, Stanley, Walter, Ed, and sisters Louise, Veronica, and Bernice. Joe was born in Winnipeg on October 23, 1941, and grew up in the Cooks Creek area. When he started trade school, Joe moved to West Kildonan to live with his sister Louise. It was here he met his future wife, Maria, next door. He worked at Manitoba Bridge for several years, before joining the Boilermakers Union in 1975. For many years he was away on jobs, including working in the Beaufort Sea with Purvis Navcon. Joe retired in 2003, but continued to work on jobs periodically. Joe loved to spend time with his family, often taking them on camping trips and other road trips within Manitoba and as far away as California. As his children moved on to establish their own careers, Joe and Maria enjoyed their winter vacations in various tropical locations. As grandchildren arrived, he became an important part of their lives, doing short sitting duties and taking them to soccer games. Joe was skilled in carpentry undertaking countless projects, most notably his own house, garage, cottage, and many furniture items, cabinets and staircases. He was very social, regularly spending time with friends over a beer, sharing stories, and discussing the politics of the day. Passion and dedication describe so much of his character. He would always defend what he believed in and was never shy in the way in which he did. Selflessness and generosity were also such a prominent part of his life. He was always there to help out his family and friends. So much of what he did was to enable his children to be successful in their lives, to provide his wife with opportunities to be happy, and to help his friends whenever needed. You will always be in our hearts and souls. We love you very much. A memorial service, with reception to follow, will be held on Monday, February 25, 2013, 10:00 a.m. at Cropo Funeral Home, 1442 Main St., Winnipeg (204 586-8044). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba.
