GWENDA SANGER With regret, the death is announced of Gwenda Sanger on Tuesday, February 12, 2013. She was born on March 5, 1921 in Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorganshire, Wales. She was the younger daughter of the late Albert James Marshall and his wife May. Gwenda is survived by her niece, Christine Pearmund and her family of Sunnydale, Berkshire, England. At age 11 Gwenda was sent away to be educated at the prestigious boarding school, Malvern Girls' College, Great Malvern, Worcestershire, where she remained until early July, 1939. Two months later the Second World War broke out and at age 21 Gwenda volunteered for the Women's Royal Naval Service in which she became a Plotter and worked in the operations room in Plymouth, Devon. Eleven months later she was boarded for overseas service and spent time in Lebanon and Egypt where she worked for Naval Intelligence. After being demobilized, Gwenda worked for the Captain of Industry and later took up an appointment with the British National Health Service. Gwenda came to Canada in June, 1962 to become the second wife of the late John W. Sanger, retired Chief Engineer and General Manager of what was then City Hydro. She became a naturalized citizen and always felt privileged to live in the beautiful city of Winnipeg. In her younger days, Gwenda enjoyed amateur acting, particularly comedy. She loved to hear people laugh and, in fact, had a wicked sense of humour. A service of remembrance will be held at Thomson Funeral Home on Thursday, February 28, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
