FRED STOYKO November 14, 1922 - February 23, 2013 It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Fred Stoyko, age 90, at the Seven Oaks General Hospital on February 23, 2013 after a brief illness. Fred will be remembered by his loving and ever patient wife of 61 years, Mary, his children John (Carmen), Susie (Michael) Maskell, daughter-in-law Judy, grandchildren Justin, Matthieu, Andrew and Nadine, brother Bill (Helen), sister Stella and various extended family members. Fred was predeceased by his father Ignac, mother Frances, oldest son Raymond, and brother-in-law John Horaski. Fred was born in 1922 in Szenew Tarnopol, Poland to parents Ignac and Frances. In 1936 the family moved to Canada and settled in the Eastdale area, near the town of Beausejour. Fred would often recount the beauty and joy of living in the rural communities, remembering the various jobs he held amongst the farming area and some of the hardships he endured while growing up. It seemed the snow was much deeper back in those early days, but Fred took everything in stride, in his usual determined way. In 1951 Fred married Mary and settled into life in Winnipeg. At that time he was already working as a butcher at Burns Meats, a job he would hold until retirement in 1988. A dedicated husband and soon to be new father, the young couple built a house for themselves on Magnus Avenue, with Fred and his father-in-law Roman Antoniw, doing the lion's share of the construction. As the family continued to grow up, many enjoyable summer holidays were spent at Kenora and Falcon Lake with camping, swimming and socializing as a popular pastime. Weekends at other times of the year were spent with family at his parent's farm near Beausejour. Fred lived his life with a dedicated effort and love for all that knew him. He was a hard worker, generous in his capacity to help out any and all that needed a hand. Fred retired from Burns Meats in 1988 after 42 years of service. Throughout his retirement Fred enjoyed many aspects of leisure, including golfing with other Burns retirees, gardening, socializing with family and friends and playing baby-sitter to his beloved grandchildren. He generously provided assistance to his family in helping with their newly purchased housing projects such as painting, remodeling, and even grass cutting chores. Fred was always willing and able to offer much needed direction in achieving the desired final result. His talent also went well beyond his generosity. He was ingenious at devising uses for various items that might have otherwise been cast aside. There was nothing that he couldn't, or wouldn't attempt to fix and many of his projects are still obvious to this day. He was the true master "Jack of all trades" and will be sorely missed. The Family would like to offer thanks and much appreciation to the staff on the 3rd floor at the Seven Oaks General Hospital for the compassion and dedicated care given to Fred during his brief stay. Funeral Service will be held at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. on Thursday, February 28, 2013 at 10:30 a.m., officiated by Father Isidore Dziadyk with interment to follow at the Holy Family Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, 737 Bannerman Ave., Winnipeg, MB or to a charity of one's choice. CROPO FUNERAL CHAPEL 204-586-8044

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • I found my 2nd cousin, Mary Stoyko (Fred’s wife). Her Father and my Father were 1st cousins and my grandparents (Antoniw) brought them (my Father Harry, his brother Fred and Mary’s father Roman from Poland in 1911). We visited Fred and Mary in their home, I believe, in 2000. Fred BBQ’d hamburgers. It was a wonderful occasion for me and my husband, John. I enjoyed meeting their family. I came home with a Million dollar picture that Mary gave me of her Father sitting in a chair and my Father on the right hand side and my Father’s brother Fred on the left hand side. It’s on my hallway of pictures. God be with you Fred! - Posted by: Gail Anthony Davis ( Fred’s wife Mary and I are 2nd cousins, her Father and my Father Harry Anthony came over from Pol) on: Jul 14, 2020

  • Rest in Peace Freddy, Sylvia Tober - Posted by: Sylvia Tober (Neighbor) on: Feb 26, 2013

  • My deepest sympathy to Mary and family on the passing of dear Fred. Mary and I were the best of school friends. I was fortunate to be part of Mary & Fred's wedding party. As time passed and our busy lives got in the way we lost touch. Later on, we would occasionally reconnect when Mary & Fred were shopping at Sears. It was always nice to catch up on family news. Cherish the memories of a life well lived. - Posted by: Ollie Carlson (Family Friend) on: Feb 26, 2013

  • Our sincere sympathy to you all on the loss of your Husband/Dad. Fred was always welcoming and hospitable. His love for you was evident and I hope that it will sustain you in this sad time.
