GRACE ELLEN (nee LEITKIE) LAIDLAW March 16, 1924 - February 22, 2013 Grace was born at home in St. Boniface, MB, and died peacefully at the Menno Home in Abbotsford BC. She was predeceased by her parents William and Hanna Leitkie, her husband A.W. Bill Laidlaw, her brother Charles and her brother-in-law Walter McCaw. She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, William and Susan, Brett and Mary; her husband Roy Gomm and his children David (Judy) and Andrea (Nick Fraser); and her sisters Margaret Stoddart (Norman) and Frances McCaw. Grace and Bill were married in Winnipeg in 1951, and not long after that they moved to Eden Prairie, MN, where they spent many happy years rearing two active boys. Grace not only gardened at home but also volunteered with the Glen Lake Garden Club. She was a Cub Scout den mother and an avid golfer. Busy as she was, she found time to do part-time secretarial work and later became the secretary at a school for mentally handicapped young people. Grace and Bill moved to Abbotsford in 1983. It was here that Bill died in 1990. In 1992, Grace and Roy, both widowed, decided to spend their remaining years together. They were happy years spent traveling the world. Among their activities was active participation in the M.S.A. Kiwanis Club. Grace was awarded the Senior of the Year Award by the Fraser Valley Seniors Resource Center in 2004. Grace nurtured and loved those around her. Her gracious, loving nature will be sadly missed. The family would like to add a special note of appreciation to the caring staff at the Menno Home. In accordance with her wishes Grace will be cremated and her ashes interred in Winnipeg. There will be a service of remembrance for Grace at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 8 at the Calvin Presbyterian Church, 2597 Bourquin Crescent East, Abbotsford. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Abbotsford Hospice Society, 33134 Marshall Rod. Abbotsford, BC, V2S 1K5 (www.abbotsfordhospice.org).

  • I haven't seen Auntie Grace since I was visiting BC about 18 years ago! I remember wonderful times with her and Uncle Bill in Eden and at Gramma's cottage. Auntie Grace was such a nice, warm lady. Whenever Grace, Fran and Marg(my mom) all got together they were so cute! I have so many happy memories. Uncle Bill was dearly missed, and then Roy came along and Grace was absolutely glowing. I was so thrilled for the both of them and very impressed when I met Roy My heart today aches for Billy, Bret and Roy, yet;I am also celebrating Grace's long and fruitfull life. All my love, Laura - Posted by: Laura (Neice) on: Mar 02, 2013
