JANET DOROTHY DOMENCO (nee WARWICK) After an inspired and courageous battle with Cancer, it is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Janet Domenco, at the age of 63 years, on Friday, February 22, 2013 with family and friends by her side at St. Boniface Hospital, Palliative Care Unit. She is survived by her daughter Tamara and was predeceased by her husband Roger in 2010, her parents Dorothy and John, sister Karen and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Janet was born and raised in Winnipeg, MB where she worked hard all of her life and prided herself on having a strong work ethic. Her favourite job as a young woman was working at a printing firm where she had aspirations of one day becoming a writer. Life had other plans for Jan and after several years of travelling North America with her young family, she and her husband purchased land across the street from where they lived in Headingley, MB and later built, owned and operated two market gardens and nurseries for nearly 20 years. Their businesses ran the gamut from garden supply to fresh-food grocery stores, quality bedding plants, trees and shrubs, u-pick strawberry and vegetable farms, landscape design services, commercial property maintenance services and the list goes on. Jan discovered early on in her entrepreneurship she had a passion for creating something out of nothing and making it beautiful. She enrolled into landscape design at the University of Manitoba and although the demands of owning and operating a business ultimately prevailed, she quickly became a trusted and sought-after, self-taught designer in the community and was often given 'carte blanche' by her customers. Jan believed in maintaining a strong presence in the community through her business and often participated in many related events such as Charleswood in Motion Days, extra-curricular programs with local schools for students with special needs teaching them to garden, to offering gardening advice from time to time on CJOB. After a partial retirement, the education bug eventually caught up with Jan again and she enrolled into the Administrative Assistant program at Herzing College where she graduated at the top of her class with honours. Jan loved to try new things and in addition to continuing her education, some of her favourite hobbies included gardening, woodworking, learning to oil paint, helping her daughter with her many house renovations and her dearest passion of all, cooking. Jan often said she should have been Italian as it was her favourite of all foods. Every dish she created was made with TLC and left everyone always wanting more. Jan was a lover of the arts and practiced contemporary and jazz dance as a teenager. She loved TV and movies and keeping her mind sharp with crosswords and cryptoquotes. Although she faced many health challenges in the recent years, she believed in staying active and continued to work hard at everything she did. Jan truly cherished her family and friends. She was a devoted Mother to her daughter and a loyal and trustworthy friend. Jan considered many of her friends to be like her family and treasured every moment with each of them. She also loved her most trusted companion Zoe who in turn loved her 'Gramma' just as much. Jan collected angels and often referred to both her daughter and friends as her own 'private angels'. She was a teacher of patience and kindness and was an avid believer in hope, which she held on to up until her last breath. Hope is what guided her home and she is now at peace with the angels. As per Jan's wishes, no funeral service will be held and private interment has already taken place. Honorary pallbearers were Roger Domenco, Stanley Neville, Reg Neville, Barry Neville, Ian Paterson and Lloyd Taplin. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Children's Wish Foundation, Manitoba Chapter or the Winnipeg Humane Society. Special thanks to Jan's and her daughter's wonderful friends who stood by both of them throughout her illness, CancerCare Manitoba (McDermot location), the many volunteers but particularly 'Bonnie at Chemo', the Palliative Care Unit staff at St. Boniface Hospital and Realcare Inc.
