ETHEL JEAN HUGHES (MANNESS) November 12, 1924 - February 18, 2013. It is with sad hearts that we announce the passing of our much loved mother, grandmother (Nanna), great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Peacefully on Monday, February 18, 2013, Ethel Hughes passed away in her home at Lion's Manor in Stonewall, MB. Ethel was born in St. Pierre and spent most of her early childhood in nearby Carey before moving to Bowsman where she had her formal schooling. In 1940, her family moved to a farm in Rosser, where she met and married Edward (Ted) Hughes. In Stonewall they farmed and raised their four children, before moving to Morden and purchasing a hotel. In 1976, Ethel Jean moved to Winnipeg and worked at the University of Winnipeg until her retirement. She was always trying something new and met many interesting friends along the way. Ethel's family was her life, if you knew her, you heard the stories of all her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, she was very proud of them all. Ethel Jean was a 4-H teacher, active life member of the Royal Canadian Legion where she was President, Warden and worked on various Committees. Her volunteer work, especially the many years of service for the PC party of Manitoba, and various seniors groups was very special to her. She spent many hours enjoying knitting, crocheting, sewing, writing, poetry and lively conversation. Ethel is predeceased by her parents Charles and Hannah Manness, her brothers Leslie, Earl, Douglas, Gordon, Frederick, her sisters Eunice, Pearl, Darlene and her son-in-law Lorne Nichol. Ethel is survived by her four children, Roseann Nichol, Lesley Hughes Pasuta (Steve), Sharron Klinkhammer (Bryan) and Scott Hughes (Kim) and her grandchildren Brent (Dana), Kim (Clayton), Sean, Michael, Steven, Lean (Sam), Jeff, Tara (Greg), Kirsti (Wayne), Brittany, Tyler, Hailey and Ryan, 15 great-grandchildren and her brother Allen. Her positive attitude and inner strength will be missed by all. Thank you for being the Rock of our family. There will be a celebration of life on Friday, May 3, 2013, at 1:00 p.m. at Stonewall United Church, 369 1st Avenue North, Stonewall, MB. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to a charity of your choice. For those who wish to sign the online Guest Book please visit our website. Chapel Lawn www.chapellawn.ca 885-9715
