Lovingly remembered by surviving family: Wife: Bev; Children: Jaclyn and Tori; Parents: Red and Ruth McConnell, Katie Horn; Brothers and Sisters: Kim (Carolyn) McConnell, David (Kimberly) Horn, Carolyn (Len) Jones; Nieces and Nephews: Jill, Mark, Ross, Veronica, Holly. Wendel was born and raised in Hamiota where community, 4-H and sports shaped his personality and career. During his youth, all sports, especially hockey and baseball were a big part of Wendel's life. He continued his passion for sports as a devote fan of the Boston Bruins, Winnipeg Jets, Cincinnati Reds, Toronto Argonauts and the UND Fighting Sioux. In 1980 Wendel graduated from the University of Manitoba as a proud Aggie. Before joining Investors Group he held many sales and leadership positions in the agricultural, chemical and pork industries. Wendel joined Investors Group in 2000. In his job as Executive Consultant, he has received many awards, including setting a national record for first year business that still stands today. Wendel was consistently one of Investors Group's top performers. He was driven to create great relationships with all his clients, seeing them as friends and believing it was important to always do what was right for them. Wendel and Bev married in 1992. He immediately embraced the role of stepfather with Jaclyn. Tori was born in 1995. Wendel adored her and she was the apple of his eye. Mac, the four legged human', completed the family. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, March 11, 2013 at Immanuel Pentecostal Church, 955 Wilkes Ave. Wendel was an avid promoter of the Heart and Stroke Foundation and had a deep love for his home town Hamiota where he grew up playing the sports that he loved. It is for these reasons we ask that, in lieu of flowers, donations please be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 6 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB R3L 9Z9 or Hamiota District Sports Complex Memorial Fund, Box 521, Hamiota, MB R0M 0T0. I am shocked to find out of Wendell's passing so late after the event. I went looking him up on google in an attempt to reach out and re-connect only to find of his passing instead. Wendell and I lived together in Pickering, Ontario for a number of years. We played many sports together including hockey and softball. Wendell (Wendy as I called him), was a great friend and a absolute joy to be around. I am truly sorry for the families (and all of our) loss. - Posted by: Mike Kershaw (Friend) on: Mar 06, 2019

I'm so saddened to hear of Wendell's passing. I grew up with Wendell in Hamiota, and we played on many of the same hockey teams as youngsters. He had a HUGE amount of character, even back then, and I always admired his fearlessness when it came to meeting new people. Rest well, my friend.... - Posted by: Ross Perlmutter (Friend) on: Jun 03, 2013

My condolences the family. Wendell was a great friend and loved by many. We were neighbours in Lethbridge in 1984 and I remember how all the neighbourhood kids were afraid of him when he first moved in, but it didn't take them long to figure out that Wilbur was just a big kid himself and then they were always at his door trying to get him to come out and play street hockey with them! He was one of kind, and will be missed. - Posted by: Brent Difley (Co-worker and friend) on: Apr 05, 2013

I was heartbroken to return from abroad and learn that Wendel had passed away. Our family has known Wendel and Bev for many years since our youngest daughter Laura attended school with Tori and they became friends. They played on the same soccer team until they were well into their teens, and we recall many, many times watching their games with Wendel (who more often than not preferred to stand rather than sit). I also recall the time when Wendel and I played in an end-of-season parents versus daughters soccer game where he revealed considerable talent in goal. I will miss running into him occasionally when taking our dog for a walk, for he always had a cheerful greeting and made one feel like a valued friend. Joan and I offer our deepest sympathy to Bev and Tori and Jaclyn, as well as Wendel's parents, on the loss of such a genuinely special man. We will miss him greatly. - Posted by: Richard Howes (friend and neighbour) on: Mar 19, 2013

Dear Bev and family, My sincere condolences on the loss of Wendel. Although we'd only met a few times, they were always for something exciting (Kim's 50th and Kim's inauguration to CAHF). I'm so proud to have met you and to have seen how close your entire family was. Wendel seemed such a lovely, gentle man, someone so very respected and honourable. I wish you the best, Bev, as you move forward now without Wendel. You are in my thoughts and prayers. Sincerely, Donna Ford - Posted by: Donna Ford (Colleague of Kim's ) on: Mar 17, 2013

Words just seem to fail me, when I first heard today that Wendel had passed away. Being out in Alberta had its challenges as all correspondence had to be by mail, e-mail or phone. However he never forgot a birthday or an anniversary. He also was a great influence in our financial decisions and will now be sorely missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Bev, Jaclyn and Tori, and Wendell's family. His always positive outlook was a great encouragement for us. - Posted by: Gilbert & Hanna Steinke (Client/Friend) on: Mar 14, 2013

Wendel, you will be greatly missed! You always had the ability to make me smile even when I really didn't want to. You had the ability to make me mad- even when I didn't want to:) - but most of all you had the ability to make me laugh! Thank you. I will miss you and think of you often. - Posted by: Cathy Mitchell (friend as well as co-worker) on: Mar 14, 2013

My good lifelong friend and little brother "Wilbur", what an influence you have been. From weed-picking, post-pounding teenagers to full-fledged grownups with families and children, almost every action I take reminds me of some story that involves our adventures... and mis-adventures! I'm so glad we stayed in touch across time and provinces, even if not in person. Bev, Jaclyn and Tori, please accept our condolences. I am sure you are well aware of just how well-known and loved Wendel was, and there will always be a place in our hearts occupied by the big man. Rest well my old friend. - Posted by: Brian and Barb Gross (Former co-worker and friend) on: Mar 14, 2013

I had the honour of meeting Wendel many years ago when I was a game night attendant for the Winnipeg Jets and he sat in my section. He always greeted us with a big smile and a hug when he came up the ramp and would ask how our lives were going. Years later I was lucky enough to renew his acquaintance when his daughter dated my son's friend and Wendel would come and watch the boys play volleyball. He always had a big smile on his face and genuinely enjoyed watching the boys play. He had such a beautiful spirit and I am so honoured to have known him. To his wife and daughters, I offer you my heart felt condolences on the loss of such a wonderful man. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. - Posted by: Maria Lysack (Friend) on: Mar 14, 2013

I knew Wendel through his brother Kim, during his university days and in the years after and I got to know the McConnell’s of Hamiota. Wendel was a kind and fun loving person, coming from such a fine family. I am saddened by his loss and I know he touched a great many in a special way. I offer my condolences to his family and friends. Rest in peace, Wendel. - Posted by: Doug McNair (friend) on: Mar 12, 2013

We were deeply saddened and incredulous upon hearing of Wendel's passing. We will forever remember his joie de vivre, always ready with a quick line or joke. My deepest condolences to Wendel's family and to Brad. I will always remember Wendel as a great big teddy bear who could make me laugh just by walking around the corner. He was always helping Tori sell her girl guide cookies and would always try to talk you into buying a whole case instead of just a couple boxes. You will be deeply missed, Wendel. - Posted by: Carmen Kube (Former Coworker and Friend) on: Mar 12, 2013

I heard the sad news this morning and I still can't stop thinking this is a mistake. I wish I would have known sooner as I would have travelled to pay my respects. Wendel was an amazing Advisor who knew how to make his clients feel like they were his only ones. Wendel has taught me so much about how to build relationships with clients and I often use examples of the things he did when I am teaching. Wendel became a good friend as we both enjoyed a passion for hockey and business. Wendel would be pleased to hear that I am now so happy the Bruins were able to beat my beloved Canucks to win the Stanley Cup. He deserved to see them win! Wendel I will miss your humour, professionalism, honest banter and most of all the happiness and optimism you brought to every conversation. I hope I can live to be half of the professional you were. You will be missed forever. - Posted by: Nick and Kellie Davis (Friend and Client) on: Mar 11, 2013

Whenever we'd talk on the phone, I would greet Wendel with a "How are you today?". His answer was always the same; an excited and passionate "Darn Near Perfect!!" He loved teasing Canadiens' fans almost as much as his Bruins. Though we were clients of Wendel's, he treated us like genuine good friends. You gave so much of your time to us. You were so caring and supportive with the recent death of my own father. You were so friendly to us. You will be very much missed. May you enjoy an eternal place now that is "Darn near Perfect!" - Posted by: Chris and Karen Mackie (Client, Friend) on: Mar 11, 2013

So deeply sad to hear of Wendel's passing. He was such a uniquely generous and kind person with a funny anecdote or story to tell whenever we spoke. I'll always remember his 'loud as life' presence at our wedding in Moose Jaw and I'll cherish all the fun times we shared in Lethbridge. Woody, as we grew to love him by, chose a beautiful woman, Bev, to be his life partner and Dave, Fred and I were fortunate enough to attend their wedding. Woody was, from day one, was an instant family man. He loved Jaclyn deeply and when Tory was born he couldn't have been more proud....From time to time Wendel would just call me to 'chat' about life, his kids, he and Bev's fulfilled life together, and to 'keep up on things in Lethbridge'...I'll really miss those chats ....My heart and sympathy goes out to Wendel's parents, his brother and to Bev and his girls Jaclyn and Tory...He was a great man and will be sadly missed by all who knew him....much love Chriss and Dave Lawson from Lethbridge. - Posted by: Chriss and Dave Lawson (friends) on: Mar 11, 2013

Bev and family. Wendel truly was a good man who cared about everyone. He could find solutions when they didn't exist, he made promises that he always kept. He worked hard and he played hard and he left us far too soon. Please accept Wendy and my condolences, we are so sad. - Posted by: Ken McLean (friend) on: Mar 11, 2013

Wendel has been our financial advisor for the last 7 years or so. This relationship actually developed into a good friendship over time. He was a very caring and thoughtful friend. He never forgot and was always on time sending birthday or anniversary cards. He also became very close with our two boys. The Boston Bruins are my kids’ least favourite team and Wendel, being the Bruins #1 fun, would always like to remind them how good the Bruins are. Just after the last game against the Jets (in which they won), he called home and left a message for the kids saying “The Bruins are God’s team and they will win the Stanley Cup again; they have actually started engraving their name on the Stanley Cup”. My kids always laughed when they heard his messages. We actually haven’t been able to tell our kids about this yet; too scared of how they will take it. As a financial advisor, he has been very helpful. We were always impressed by how quickly he got back to us with a lot of information and a lot of numbers. We are still in a shock for his untimely passing. He will be dearly missed. One thing we will always remember is his sense of humour. He had the gift of making you laugh even during serious moments. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time. R.I.P Wendel! - Posted by: Tedros Bezabeh & Makda Matteos (Friend/Client) on: Mar 11, 2013

I first met Wendel when he was a summer student in Melfort in 1979. Then our paths crossed again in Lethbridge in 1983 - a meeting that led to a lifelong friendship. I always admired Wendel's positive, upbeat, competitive and compassionate nature. Wendel was 'in the prime of his life' for as long as I knew him. And my life has been blessed and enriched by having him as my friend. My family's thoughts and prayers go out to Bev, Tori, Jaclyn and the rest of the McConnell family. May God give you peace and strength during this difficult time. - Posted by: Keith Schenher (Friend) on: Mar 11, 2013

I met Wendel several years ago as he was a friend of my brother's and I was in need of a financial advisor. Wendel always kept my best interests at heart and even when he felt I should go that extra mile and I fought him on it, he would accept my wishes. When my dad passed away, Wendel made the trip out to rural MB to attend the prayers and his letter he sent after, had me in tears all over again. That was Wendel, always thinking of others. You will be missed, Wendel, and I will miss those yearly visits and the phone calls and emails that were all in good fun. My thought go out to Bev (who he always talked about) and his girls. - Posted by: Pamela Storoschuk (Friend/Client) on: Mar 10, 2013

Wendel and I shared an apartment in Prince Albert, Sask. when we were both starting our careers back in 1980. Wendel and I played on a Slow Pitch team and had tons of laughs during the game and over a few beers after the game. Wendel enjoyed music and especially when he got his new Klipsch speakers. God needs good angels and he must have needed one who could hit a home run. We will miss you Buddy. Bev, Ruth and Red, Kim and Carolyn and families We are so saddened to hear of your great loss. Although we only met Wendal once or twice, we know what wonderful stock he came from and what wonderful examples he had to follow. Ruth and Red you should be so proud of your accomplishments as they show in the accomplishments of your children. We have always admired the closeness and love that is so obvious in your family. I remember Wendel as a great friend and hockey fan. I have shared games with Wendel in Prince Albert, Montreal and of course here in Winnipeg. At the games we discussed life, family, dreams and players that should have made the show. Wendel was a kind heart, caring and compassionate who would step up to lend a hand for those who were in need. As a fervent Boston Bruins fan, Wendel dished out many comments and sometimes had to eat some crow over how the Bruins played, and even my young children would try to egg me on to phone Uncle Wendel whenever his team came up a little short. While there were big words on how the Bruins or Argos were playing, I had the pleasure of hearing Wendel tell of how busy and well the three ladies in his life were doing. You are a great friend, a great family man, and a gentleman who will be missed by so many people. - Posted by: Gordon Kowalchuk (friend) on: Mar 09, 2013

25 years have passed since I first met Wendel across the aisle of a busy ag show where we vigorously competed for attention from the farmers passing by and for the most part ignoring both the big boisterous man in the Elanco booth and the little Roundup hawking woman from Monsanto. I learned so much from him over the years, things I will never forget like...How important it is to put joy at the centre of everything you do - How family is always more important than work and of course - How humour can get you through the toughest of times. My thoughts and prayers go out to your family buddy. You will be missed. - Posted by: Judy Morfitt (Friend, Client, Co-worker and Former Competitor) on: Mar 09, 2013

Having met Wendel while volunteering on a community board some 13 years ago, his magnetic personality shone right from the start and that was the beginning of what turned into a business relationship and friendship. I've known and dealt with Wendel over the past 13 years now, both on a personal, and business relationship. His sense of humor, unique way of always making you feel at ease, and making you feel like you were the most important customer he dealt with will be greatly missed. He knew how to treat people, and how to make us laugh everytime we talked. We will miss him dearly. He may leave a hole in our hearts with his absence, but he has filled a empty spot just by knowing him, and having his memory with us. I first met Wendel in the summer of 2001 on Parkroyal Bay. He struck up a conversation after seeing our Aurora, Ontario recycling bins. Merril and I became friends with Bev and Wendell and their girls. We learned about the proper way to grow lawn grass, the importance of Christmas decorations and enjoyed laughs and good times with the McConnells. We will miss Wendell and remember him fondly. - Posted by: Dave & Merril Johnson (Friends & former neighbours) on: Mar 08, 2013

Wendel was an amazing person. I will miss our telephone calls and our bantering back and forth about the Jets and his all time favorite team the Bruins. You were taken away too soon from us. My thoughts are with Bev and Tory. I will miss you very much. - Posted by: Heather Hill () on: Mar 08, 2013

I remember Wendell and I went to the Indy 500 in 1992. Our eyes were opened and we had a great time. You could always count on Wendell to help you out when you needed a hand. Bev and family, I am so saddened for your loss. Aggies Once!!! - Posted by: Darryll Dicks (Friend and fellow Aggie) on: Mar 08, 2013

Wendell was a great friend we went to school together from kindergarten to grade 12. He was always full of wit. I will never forget the yearly phone calls on my birthday reminding me how "old" I was. Being 11 months older than him! RIP Wendell. You will be missed! - Posted by: Karen Miller (Friend) on: Mar 08, 2013

Wendel, thanks for always having a great outlook on life, and making the lives of all around you pleasant and funny every day. You are a great friend and will always be missed. - Posted by: Brad Lumsden (Friend) on: Mar 08, 2013
