JOSEPH PETER KATCHENOSKI Joseph Peter Katchenoski passed away peacefully March 1, 2013, at Deer Lodge Centre, after a valiant two year struggle following a stroke. He was 93 years old. He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Kathleen and his two daughters Gillian (Jim) Ross of Calgary, Alberta and Dayle (Terry) Mlynarovich. He was a proud grandfather to Alison (Chris) Albert of Clayton, California, Lesley (Patrick) Roelofsen of Calgary, Alberta, Shaun Mlynarovich, Heather (Jeff) Penner and a proud great-grandpa to Jimmy and Michael Albert, and Thea and Brynn Roelofsen. He is also survived by his brother Murray. He was predeceased by his parents John and Mary, and his siblings Francis, Sophie, Helen and Ted. Joe grew up in Souris, Manitoba the fifth of six children. He had many happy memories and stories of his early life there. After completing Grade 11, Joe joined the army at Camp Shilo and went overseas to England in 1939 with the P.P.C.L.I. He saw action in North Africa, Sicily and Italy. He returned to Canada in 1946 and settled in Transcona with Kathleen until he entered Deer Lodge in 2011. After a course in electronics, he went to work for Western Sound. He installed the sound system in the Health Sciences Centre and in 1967 designed and installed the sound system in the new Colombo Airport in Ceylon. This was a trip and adventure he loved to talk about. In summer he enjoyed his time at Falcon Lake fishing, boating and having fun with his grandchildren. He was a wonderful gardener and took great pleasure tending to his beautiful flowers. Winter found him skating and spending happy days on the slopes around Calgary. Joe was talented both musically and artistically. At Deer Lodge he was pursuing new techniques with his painting instructor and was very proud of his accomplishments. One of his greatest pastimes was arguing politics. He was an avid reader and very much a self educated man. Trips to Alberta, British Columbia and England to visit family and friends provided great joy to him. The family cannot thank the staff of Deer Lodge enough for the amazing care, kindness and compassion they provided for Joe. You truly were his angels. Cremation has taken place. A gathering to celebrate Joe's life will be held this summer. For those wishing to donate in his memory please consider Deer Lodge Centre Tower 6.
