LAWRENCE STEPHEN JOSEPH MAYER May 3, 1933 - March 6, 2013 Unexpectedly, at the age of 79, Lawrence Mayer died on Wednesday, March 6, 2013, at the Grace Hospital. Left to cherish Lawrence's memory are his loving wife Lesley; daughter Andra (Lyall); brother Norm (Betty); nephews Bruce (Elaine) and James (Val); many nieces and nephews; father-in-law Rob Irle; sister-in-law Jane (Denis); cousins Mary (Edwin), Joe (Lynne), Val, as well as numerous friends. He was predeceased by his mother and father Mae (nee Cawley) and Matt Mayer; cousin Steve Cawley; and his mother-in-law Marian Irle. Lawrence was born in Gypsumville, MB, and grew up on a farm. At 18, once he graduated from high school, he moved to Winnipeg. His first job was with a freezer company, and then he began his career with Land Acquisition, with the Manitoba Government. He spent the next 45 years in this department working his way up to a senior management position, where he made many long lasting relationships. Lawrence was highly regarded by everyone including all of his friends and coworkers. He treated everyone with respect and kindness. Lawrence was devoted to all his family and was a very loving and caring person. On Thursday, March 14, 2013, Lawrence's Funeral Service will be held at 1:30 p.m. in Westwood Community Church, 401 Westwood Drive with a reception to follow. We want to thank the Winnipeg Fire and Paramedic Services and the staff at the Grace Hospital. Condolences & Memories (7 entries)

  • I was a volunteer at the WHS with Lawrence. Though I only knew him there, his kindness and decency were evident. My condolences to Lesley and the family. - Posted by: Arthur Kempan (Friend) on: May 06, 2013

  • I was deeply saddened by the news of Lawrence's passing. I was hired by Lawrence when I was 18. My mind races through all the good( and funny) times together. I learned a lot from him during my 25 years at Land Acquisition. There are no words to express how wonderful Lawrence was. He often said to me that it was great that we "grew up together". He was right. I cherish my memories of Lawrence. I was elated when he married Lesley-the best thing that happened to him! - Posted by: Corinne Sereda (Bishoff-Lussier) (co-worker) on: Mar 20, 2013

  • Lawrence hired me at 19 years old with Land Acquisition in 1977. He was a great manager, worked with him for 14 years. He will be deeply missed. My condolences go out to his wife and my friend Lesley and daughter and family. - Posted by: Cheryl Griffin (Co-worker) on: Mar 17, 2013

  • Hi Leslie, it was great to have known Lawrence. I could not make it yesterday for the memorial service. He was a great person and meant so much to you. Judi - Posted by: Judith Penner (Friend and co-worker) on: Mar 15, 2013

  • I'm saddened to hear of Lawrence's passing. He was a true gentleman and a fine example for all of us. I feel privileged to have known and worked with with him for 5 of his 45 years at Land Acquisition. He was a special person who will be remembered fondly by many. My sincere condolences to his family and friends. - Posted by: Joseph Imbrogno (former co-worker) on: Mar 13, 2013

  • A wonderful person and gave me a chance at my first full time job. Lots of great memories with him and the people in the office. - Posted by: Marlene Breland nee Kennell (Lawrence was my first boss.) on: Mar 11, 2013

  • Canada lost a famous person on March 6 by the name of Stompin Tom Connors, well we also lost another great person on this day as well by the name of Lawrence Mayer. This is truly a sad time for many people that have crossed paths with Lawrence. He was truly a fine gentleman in every sense of the word. He never found fault in anyone. When I worked with him several years ago, come Friday afternoon at 4:00, he'd be putting on his coat, and he would always look back at the secretarial pool and say "be good girls" with his little grin. He will be remembered by all. - Posted by: Lynda Yachyshen (Past co-worker & friend) on: Mar 10, 2013
