Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJAMES GORDON CARTWRIGHT 1917 - 2013 On March 2, 2013, in his 96th year, Gordon Cartwright passed away peacefully at Vista Park Lodge Personal Care Home. Dad was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Meryl (Boardman), his parents, James Lewis and Elizabeth Sophia; as well as his three sisters: Edith, Gertrude and Dorothy. He is survived by three children: Ron (Marilyn), Elna (Don) and Glen (Carolyn); grandchildren: Craig, Kristy, Shannon, Lindsay, Matt, Danny, Laura, and great-grandchildren: Kale, Erin, Tye, Kaylee, Jennie and Emerson. Gordon was the youngest of four siblings who were raised on Semple Avenue and educated in the north end of Winnipeg. He was employed by the Hudson Bay Company as a meat cutter until 1943, when he enlisted in the R.C.A.F. and was stationed in England. Upon his discharge in 1946, he continued his career as a cook and meat cutter, and subsequently was responsible for the food services department for the Manitoba Teachers College (Normal School). Later, Gordon became the instructor of food services for the Manitoba Institute of Technology. When M.I.T. moved to its new location and became Red River Community College, Dad was involved in the building plans of the future food services department. He continued teaching and was department head until his retirement in 1982. Gordon was an avid carpenter and loved woodworking. He was always willing to help his children and grandchildren with their projects. Dad built the first family cottage at Dorothy Lake. Not content to relax and enjoy his success, he took on other projects over the years allowing the family to enjoy summers both at Gimli and Lake of the Woods. After purchasing land on Blackdale Road, Dad built a home and barn, becoming a gentleman farmer with huge gardens, chickens, horses and bee keeping. Following Meryl's passing in 2004, Gordon moved into Dakota House and to Vista Park Lodge in December 2012. The family would like to thank the staff of Vista Park Lodge for their wonderful care of Dad and for making his final days as pleasant as possible. Cremation has taken place. A private family interment will follow at a later date. Dad you will always be missed, but never forgotten.

We were sorry to hear that Craig's grandfather James Gordon Cartwright passed away as Craig always spoke fondly of his grandfather. We were so pleased that Craig and Robin got to spend time with his grandfather this past fall when they were in Winnipeg. Reading Mr. Cartwright's obituary gives us a real insight into what an interesting and amazing life he lived and shows the devoted love and compassion he had for his family. I see where Craig gets his love and talent for cooking and gardening. These are precious gifts handed down from a dearly loved grandfather and will be passed on to generations to come! Our deepest sympathy to his sons Ron (Marilyn), Glen (Carolyn) and daughter Elna (Don) as well as all of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. - Posted by: Flora & Herman Long (Parents-In-Law to grandson Craig Cartwright) on: Mar 18, 2013

My condolences to the family. When I saw Mr. Cartwright's obit, a flood of great memories came to me. As an 18 yr old farm boy I came to Wpg. to take the cooking course at MIT. Mr. C was a great teacher and gave me confidence I lacked. I have many great memories from that year (1961 - 1962), including his excitement of the new Red River College. I would have liked to ask him one question; How he knew I was eating olives in the walk in fridge? He called me on it, but was ever so understanding. Blessings on your family. - Posted by: Henry Lucy (Student @ MIT) on: Mar 18, 2013

Mr. & Mrs. Cartwright were fantastic neighbours when they lived in the Riverbend area. We would have many conversations talking over the fence before we went to work and when we got home. I can particularly remember one story that makes me laugh. It was when I went into labour with my first child at 5:30 am. Wanting to head to the hospital, we found that one of car's doors were all frozen and the other car we ended up getting stuck in the snow in the back lane. Not knowing what to do, we went next door and Mr. Cartwright asked what he could do. My husband immediately said...well, you could push. With no hesitation, he got behind the car with my husband and they began to push while I managed to drive and maneuver the car out of the back lane in between contractions. We ended up getting to the hospital on time. Thank you for all the great memories. ♥ You will be missed. ♥ - Posted by: Todd & Karen Chorney (Former neighbors) on: Mar 16, 2013

What a wonderful person your Dad was. I remember him well. My parents Bea & Jim Davis [Golf Pro at Tuxedo]really liked him and always enjoyed talking to him and your Mom. I do remember hearing of the building of the cottage at Dorothy Lake and doing odd jobs in your home. What a wonderful family you have. Wow even great grandchildren he had. My sincere condolences to the family. - Posted by: Bev Davis Moore (Friend and playmates of Ron & Elna at the Normal School. ) on: Mar 16, 2013
