CHARLES (CHARLIE) KRAUSE 1918 - 2013 Charlie passed away peacefully, with family by his side, on March 17, 2013. Dad has finally been reunited with his one true love, Irene, who was taken from us suddenly 31 years ago. Left behind to cherish his memory are his four children: Barb (Don), Gerry (Jacquie), Gail (Alex) and Barry; grandchildren Chris, Tina (Gary), Jeff (Alyson), Candice (Jason), Rylie, Liz (Nelson) and Cindy (Marinos); great-grandchildren Kaelen, Kendall, Lukas, Kyle, Kady, Cali, Kaeden, Alexi, Joshua and Amelia, as well as sisters-in-law Ruth and Martha, and many nieces and nephews. Charlie had an amazing life. He loved to hop a transit bus and travel around the city; his favourite place was The Forks. He often shared his memories of the Second World War and would sing his army songs to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He learned to play crib in 1939 while crossing the ocean on the S.S. Northumberland and he taught us all to play: children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A family gathering wouldn't be complete without a crib board and a deck of cards. After the war Charlie was a route driver for City Dairy. A few years passed and he moved on to Perth's Cleaners where he stayed for 35 years. Charlie touched so many people in his 94 years. He will be remembered for his sense of humour and his kindness to others. During the years he lived at Donwood Manor he made many friends and really missed them when he moved on to Deer Lodge Centre. Charlie grew to love living on Tower 5 at Deer Lodge Centre. In his three plus years there he made so many good friends. One staff member said that the residents are like family and that was evident in the love and care that we saw every day, and especially in his last few days. Our family is so grateful to the nursing staff as well as every other caregiver who played a role in Dad's life. A very special shout out goes to Gail, the Recreation Coordinator, who always made sure Charlie got to participate in all the outings and events he enjoyed so much. Thank you also to all the volunteers in Chad's Bar who made sure he didn't miss his afternoon beverage. In accordance with Charlie's wishes there will be no funeral service. Cremation has taken place and the interment will be held in mid-June, followed by a Celebration of Charlie's life. We feel it is no coincidence that our Pops died on St. Patrick's Day - one of his favourite holidays, and we will celebrate accordingly! A notice of date and time will be in the paper the Saturday prior to the event. Wheeler Funeral Home in care of arrangements

Condolences & Memories (7 entries)

  • I am Charlie's great niece, granddaughter of his oldest brother, Johannes (John) Krause. I met Uncle Charlie many years ago, probably when I first moved to Winnipeg from Saskatchewan back in 1968 to go to University. In recent years, I always sent occasion cards to Uncle Charlie, and he used to send cards to me when he was able. I was surprised, on returning from a holiday in the Holy Land, to discover that my Easter card had been returned. It was only when I called Aunt Ida on Sunday, that I discovered that Uncle Charlie had died. When I think of Uncle Charlie, I think of his blue eyes, and his mischievous smile, and his teasing manner. I will miss sending Uncle Charlie a card. Rest in piece, Uncle Charlie. I love you. • My wonderful Dad is gone but will always be with me. All I am today is because of his unconditional love. No greater father has ever existed on this earth. I remember the rides in the wheel barrow, the family gatherings at Assinboine Park and Gull Lake, teaching us to ride a two wheeler and then later a car, the two Jersy Milk bars hidden in his pockets on payday, the easter egg hunts, the cards sent in the mail for every holiday signed - God Bless "D" , the joy and love he gave to our children, his grandchildren. Dad was there and took part in all we kids did helping when we built our house, at the cottage, soccor games. Dad loved life and people especially children. No one was ever turned away from his door. I will miss him as long as I live. Rest in peace Dad - You earned it and say hello to Mom. - Posted by: Gail Glowachuk (Daughter) on: Mar 24, 2013

  • I was shocked to see Charlie's room empty today. He made mom feel so welcome when she first got to Deer Lodge. They sat at the same table and were room neighbours. He made us laugh so many times when we would visit mom. We'll miss him greatly. - Posted by: Laurie Cable and Isabel Smith (resident on Tower 5 - next door neighbour) on: Mar 24, 2013

  • I have know your Charlie for a number of years. He trained my dad, Ernie at Perth's. Your dad's route took him down past Lodge and Moray. We lived in that corner house and we would run along the front of our yard waving and yelling "Hi Charlie". Years later I meet up with your dad again at Donwood Manor. I got a job in the recreation dept. and your dad lived in the EPH. He was very well liked and put a smile on my face whenever I saw him. My sympathies to the family. - Posted by: Colleen (friend) on: Mar 23, 2013
