GUSTAV ILG May 1925 - April 2013 Dad passed away peacefully on April 1, 2013. Gustav is survived by his children: John, Elly (Vic Janzen), Vic (Karen) and Hilda (Marty Malchuk). He also leaves to mourn his grandchildren: Bryan (Melissa), Kelsey, Jessica, Aaron, Danae, Jeffrey, and Daniel. He was predeceased by his parents, Elizabeth and Jakob Ilg, siblings Annette, Jacob, Ferdinand and Erna, his wife Mary, and daughter-in-law Kathy Ilg. Dad met his true love, Mary Bergen, and they were married in 1955. Dad treasured his marriage and showed us the importance of having and being a good life partner. He was a wonderful father in so many ways. He instilled a strong work ethic in all his children and taught us the value of a dollar. He showed us how to live a life of gentle kindness and humour and our home was a home of peace. Mom and dad were devoted Christians who at the end of each day would get together for their devotions. He was a lifelong member of the North Kildonan Mennonite Church. Dad was a carpenter and he enjoyed many years working at the Air Force Base. Dad loved to tell a good story or joke and after his retirement enjoyed many happy times with many close friends, travelling to Hawaii and Mexico, visiting at cottages, going for coffee at the NorVilla or playing cards or dominoes. He enjoyed good health and an active life taking up bowling, cross country skiing, golfing, and bicycling till his late 70s. His last years were spent living in Bethania Personal Care Home and we appreciate the kindness and care he received there. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to Bethania Spiritual Care Fund or the Alzheimer Society. Funeral service will be held at North Kildonan Mennonite Church, 1131 Roch Street, on Saturday, April 6 at 11:00 a.m., with viewing prior to the service. Interment in Glen Eden Memorial Gardens.

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • I'm sending my sincere sympathies to the family. I'm thinking of you from BC and sorry I could not make it. Uncle Gustav made me laugh as he listened to my hunting stories. He always greeted me with a big smile that brightened my day. He will be sadly missed but I know he is in heaven with Dad rehashing old War stories and sharing a beverage. - Posted by: Marg Bergen (My Uncle Gustav) on: Apr 06, 2013

  • We live on Devon and Mr. Ilg on Rothesay and connected by the backlane. When I wouldwalk the neighborhood I would often see him and he always had a smile, a wave and friendly words to say. When he left his home, he was really missed in the neighbourhood especially by me. He gave me the sun on a dreary day. He was a blessing to all he met andnow the world is poorer without him yet heaven is the richer now. • Gus was a kind soul who loved a good laugh. I will cherish the domino games at Vic & Karen's when he would come to visit them. My thoughts and prayers are with the family. He is at peace now. - Posted by: Linda & Grace Smorang (Karen's (Vic's wife) sister & niece ) on: Apr 06, 2013

  • I will always remember those wonderful trips to the Oasis. Air-conditioning was not common in those days and both my dad and Onkle Gustav worked where it was very hot. The two families would pack up supper and the kids and head off to the Oasis to cool off. What a wonderful time! The watermelon was kept cold in a big tub of ice in your parents big car. We could munch on that after our swim. That was the life. Onkle Gustav was always there to answer questions when Paul had one regarding the building project he was working on. Our condolences to the Ilg Family. - Posted by: Lori and Paul Hermary (Daughter of Susan and Gerhard Thiessen) on: Apr 05, 2013
