JEFFREY ALEXANDER ROSS 1963 - 2013 The family of Jeffrey Ross is saddened to announce his sudden passing on April 5, 2013 and just prior to his 50th birthday. Jeff was born in Winnipeg on April 25, 1963 and was always proud to call Winnipeg his home. He was predeceased by his parents Les and Betty Ross. Left to mourn Jeff's passing are his much loved siblings, sister Betty Black (Gary), brother Barry Thompson (Kelli) and sister Fay Stafford (Larry), as well as nephews and niece Denny Black (Ainsley, Silas and Lawson), Jennifer Black (Trinity and Cadence) and Sam and Ben Stafford. He will also be sadly missed by his very special Aunt and Uncle, Margaret and Norman Pattern and his close cousin Penny and her husband Don Ross. Jeff was raised in St. James and graduated from Sturgeon Creek Regional High School. His sister Fay introduced him to the Manitoba Club during his high school years, where he became employed part-time. Following graduation, he started full time employment with the Manitoba Club and held a variety of positions. He was well known and well liked by staff and members alike and he was greatly missed when, after 17 years, he decided to venture off to England to pursue his dream of living and working in England in a small English pub. Upon his return to Winnipeg he rejoined the hospitality industry and spent time with The Pony Corral Restaurants, The Waverly and the Travelodge Winnipeg. He was most recently employed with the Victoria Inn Winnipeg, where he enjoyed his work, his co-workers, and the many guests and travellers he met. Jeff was a quiet, gentle soul who loved to laugh and to share a good joke. He has been described by so many as being kind, polite, and an all around "nice guy". He lived a simple life but had many and varied interests. He enjoyed movies, soccer, football and hockey and was a big fan of the Jets, the Bombers and the Goldeyes. He was ecstatic when the Jets came back to Winnipeg and had tickets to see his favourite team, the New York Islanders play the Jets on April 20. We know he will be watching the game with his Dad up above. He had a vast and varied music collection and listened to everything from Jon Bon Jovi to Natalie McMaster to Pink and Adele. He loved to travel and took vacations to England, Scotland, the Maritimes, and over the past few years to Cuba, This past January, he travelled to Cuba with brother Barry and Kelli and had a wonderful vacation. A very special memory for Jeff was taking a Caribbean cruise with his Mom and sister Betty where, as he told it, he was their "chaperone"! Family was very important to Jeff and he especially enjoyed family gatherings where he could, as he would say, "chew the rag" and get caught up on everyone's news. He also loved his time at the family cottage in Whytewold Beach and then, after it was sold, spending time at Betty's and Gary's cottage where he would hang out on the front deck relaxing and enjoying the view. Known as "U.J." to his nephews and nieces he always took an interest in their lives and activities and was quick to ask about everyone's well-being. We will miss him terribly, but take comfort in knowing he is at peace and at rest with Mom and Dad. A celebration of Jeff's life will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 25 at the Victoria Inn, 1808 Wellington Avenue. In lieu of flowers, if so desired, donations can be made to the Manitoba Heart and Stroke Foundation, 6 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6 or CancerCare Manitoba Foundation, 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9.

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • I met Jeff back around 1970 at the Assiniboine Gardens. I remember that day in the hallway. We moved away a couple of years later and then back to Winnipeg and hung out again for awhile. I have vivid memories after that. His parents were very kind to me. My mother occasionally saw his mom and would mention to me some news of a long ago friend. - Posted by: Jeffrey Horspool (Long ago friend) on: Apr 05, 2015

  • I had the pleasure of working with Jeffrey Ross at the Victoria Inn hotel. Jeff and I would discuss news events, hotel gossip and I would show him my latest magic trick. He was always encouraging and pleasant. He always took a sincere interest in other people whether it be a hotel guest or employee and he genuinely listened when people spoke. He will be missed. My Prayers are with his family. - Posted by: Alex Jay Hamm (co-worker) on: Apr 18, 2013

  • We are so sorry to hear about Jeff. We missed growing up together, because of moving to B.C. when we were 10 and 7 years old, in 1967. We remember him as very nice, quiet and being an animal lover. In the 80's, his Auntie Audrey passed on the invitation to Holly, to travel to England. Holly wished she would have, and gotten to know her cousin better. Our thoughts are with you. - Posted by: Murial,Glenda and Holly Spalding (cousins) on: Apr 15, 2013

  • Growing up with Jeff was a great honour. We shared the joys, sorrows and great experiences. One of his greatest qualities was his brilliant sense of humour and his infectious laugh. He could bring a smile to anyones face. Having lost touch with Jeff over the years as so often happens in our lives, I will always have great memories and he will have a special place in my heart as a true friend. - Posted by: Chris Hamsey (friend) on: Apr 13, 2013
