ANNETTE (ANNA) HECHTER AVERBACH On April 14, 2013, just five weeks before her 97th birthday, our elegant, courageous, charismatic matriarch, Anna, passed away. She will be sadly missed, and lovingly remembered by her children Susan and Barry Scherman, and Michael and Reesa Averbach; grandchildren Aviva (David) Levine, and Abram Averbach (Fiana Bakshan); great-grandchildren Alexis, Madelyn, and Zachary Levine. Anna was predeceased by her beloved husband Abe, granddaughter Alyssa Averbach, and her sisters, Bertha (Moe) Rusen, Esther (C.O.) Swartz, and brother, "Lefty" (Betty) Akman. Born May 21, 1916, in Winnipeg, and having lost her mother at the tender age of four, young Anna Akman quickly developed strong coping skills and resilience traits and characteristics she instilled in her children. Determined to achieve and succeed, she graduated from the University of Manitoba, where she served as president of her sorority. Anna was a voracious reader, and a marvelous cook; she attended symphonies, ballets, concerts, theater, enjoyed bridge, long walks, winters in Palm Springs, and was an avid golfer. While Anna deeply cherished all of her own children, she lovingly embraced her "adopted" children "Jimmy", Jackie, Beth, Sara, and numerous others whom she considered "her kids". She particularly valued meaningful relationships with friends, and connecting with people of all ages and stages in life. Adored by many, Anna was an inspiration, a role model, a vibrant woman. Fiercely independent, tenacious, and principled, she lived her life with dignity and grace. We will miss her infectious smile, laughing at her quick wit, her wisdom, depth and beauty. A graveside service was held at Rosh Pina Memorial Park, with Rabbi Larry Lander officiating. If desired, donations in Anna's memory may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, or the Women's Endowment Fund at the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba, or a charity of your choice.

  • My deepest condolences go out to Mrs. Averbach Rosenberg on the passing of Mrs. Hechter Averbach. Ms. (Reesa) Averbach was a new staff at Grant Park High School when I was doing my modified high school diploma. I discovered that people are your friends because they are/were in the same clubs as you in every institution that you are/have been a member of. Linda (retired) from Clinical Support Services is the best specialist that I've ever had, and I want to thank her for all the mental tools that she gave me to toggle with! - Posted by: Philip (Delivered food to the vulnerable - Meals on Wheels (2004)) on: Oct 26, 2021
