RAYMOND ALBERT JOSEPH VAN KOOTEN 1938 - 2013 It is with deep sorrow we announce the sudden passing of Ray on April 25, 2013, at the age of 75 years. He leaves behind his loving wife of 50 years, Genia, son Don (Lynda) Van Kooten of Great Falls, MB as well as his pride and joy, grandchildren Vanessa and Tyler Van Kooten, his foster grandchildren and his darling little choo-choo great-granddaughter Cheyenne. Among others that he loved were brothers David (Lorraine) Van Kooten, Morris (Marlene) Van Kooten and sister Rita (Pete), stepmother Madge Van Kooten , stepsiblings, brother and sisters-in-law and many nieces, nephews, cousins and many long time friends. Raymond was predeceased by his parents Dora and Albert Van Kooten; sister Irene; and infant brother Henry. Raymond was born on February 25, 1938, in South Junction, MB, where he was raised and educated. He moved to Winnipeg at an early age, met the Love of His Life, Genia, on a baseball field in Steinbach and was married in 1962 and along followed their son Don in 1965. Ray was employed as a milkman with Peoples Co-op and retired in 2005 after finishing his milk man days working on the truck with his son Don at Saputo Dairies. Ray loved spending time at his son's farm where you could always catch him in the garden or with his son and great-granddaughter going to check the cows. Ray was inducted into the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame in June of 2008. He loved to travel, spend time with his family, word puzzles and his Jets TV. Funeral Service will be held on April 29, 2013, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, 737 Bannerman Ave. with interment to follow at Glen Eden Memorial Gardens, 4477 Main St. Honorary pallbearers are granddaughter Vanessa, great-granddaughter Cheyenne and all of his nieces and nephews. We wish to extend special thanks to Dr. D. Miller and Linda as well as the staff of the Seven Oaks Hospital. If so desired, donations in Ray's name may be made to the St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church or the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Glen Eden Funeral Home 204-338-7111 www.glenedenmemorial.ca

  • We knew Ray as a very kind and friendly man who was most dedicated to his family. We seldom saw him without his wife Genia at his side. They were very involved with Don and Lynda's family, offering their support whenever and however they could. Ray was extremely proud of Vanessa, Tyler and their great-granddaughter, Cheyenne. He will surely be greatly missed by all. Our most sincere condolences to Genia, Don, Lynda, and their family. May God grant you much courage and strength through this difficult time. You are all in our thoughts and prayers. With our deepest sympathy, Jocelyne and Eddy Jaremowich - Posted by: Jocelyne and Eddy Jaremowich (Lynda and Don's aunt and uncle) on: Apr 28, 2013

  • Our daughter, Claire moved into the house next door to Ray and Genia on St. John's Avenue about 3 years ago. During that time, Ray and Genia have been wonderful neighbors to her and her partner, Nick. During her house renovations, Jim and I had many opportunities to chat 'over the fence' and got to know Ray a little. He was a kind, sweet man and I know Jim and I felt just a little more secure knowing Claire had such good neighbors she could count on if needed. We were deeply saddened to hear of Ray's passing. Our sympathies go out to Genia and the rest of the family. We sorrow with you all. Petchie & Jim Hawkins Killarney, Manitoba - Posted by: Petchie and Jim Hawkins (friends) on: Apr 27, 2013
