JAMES (JIM) ALLAN CARSON After a lengthy illness, Jim passed away on April 26, 2013, leaving to mourn his wife Brenda and his two daughters, Megan and Victoria. Predeceased by his parents, brother Ralph, and his father-in-law Art, Jim also leaves his brother Walter, mother-in-law Vicky, sister-in-law Janice, nephews Kevin and Jeff (Hali), great-nieces, Delaney and Layla, and his many friends who became part of his extended family. Jim was born in Canora, SK on August 13, 1947 but lived with his grandparents in Kamsack, SK. He was reunited with his Mom and two older brothers when the family farm was sold and they were able to relocate to Kamsack. An avid outdoorsman, Jim's favourite place was in the bush. He hunted anything that moved (with fur or feathers), and showed great respect for the wildlife he captured with rifle, bow, camera, or paint brush. This love of the outdoors led Jim to his first job as a taxidermist in Regina, SK. Being a taxidermist provided him with the opportunity to appreciate the fine detail in wildlife: their anatomy, as well as their magnificent diversity in colour and texture. This attention to detail, as well as his love of animals, was clearly evident in Jim's art. Jim always had a camera, a sketch pad and either a pencil or paintbrush in hand. He was a gifted artist from childhood, and his career as an artist started in Winnipeg at the Manitoba Museum. Every visitor to the Museum has started their tour at Jim's bison diorama. As a contractor for the federal and provincial governments, Jim illustrated wildlife, and designed and built multi-disciplinary signs and structures. In addition to this artwork, Jim's water colours and acrylic paintings were commissioned for galleries, offices and private residences, and a number of books feature his black and white wildlife illustrations. Although fame eluded him, success did not. He was highly respected and admired by his peers. At the end of the day though, the most important thing to Jim was his wife and two daughters. In keeping with Jim's wishes, a memorial service will not be held. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, the Canadian Diabetes Association, or a charity of your choice. Jim was a big, wonderful, kind man, and he will be forever missed by all who knew him.

Condolences & Memories (14 entries)

  • I am so sorry to have only recently read of Jim's passing. My sincere condolences to Jim's family and to his many friends. I was extremely fortunate many years ago to have purchased one of Jim's beautiful pencil sketches of Manitoba's mammals, 'The Masked Shrew. I phoned Jim many years ago, asking him to kindly provide me with the provenance of this particular sketch and of his own career path which he unstintingly gave to me. The sketch, and provenance, still occupies a pride of place showing in my home. - Posted by: Barry Hadfield (Distant friend) on: Mar 30, 2023

  • I didn't know that this was up and available and would like to take a few lines and add something. I loved my Uncle, my Aunt and my cousins although we're not a tight family I think of them everyday. I had some of my Uncles artworks until recently, I had a small tragedy and lost a few. My favourite is the chickadee sitting on a green apple. It's adorable. We had a few families go betweens that would keep us all updated but sadly they have passed away, and now we are lost and this makes me sad too, as then the mourning never stops. So, I would say, I missed you all, health, happiness to you all, and bless here and those reading this. - Posted by: Donna Carson (Niece) on: Oct 09, 2021

  • For some reason I just learned of Jim's passing. For many years I have admired his art, in particular the black and white drawings of wildlife in pamphlets etc. As a wildlife painter myself, I know the difficulties of achieving a good likeness in a simple line drawing. My condolences to the family. Tom. - Posted by: Tom Jones (Admirer of his art) on: Jul 17, 2019

  • I am sorry to hear of Jim's passing and of the loss to his family and friends. Jim's legacy is on display in his sensitive, lifelike taxidermy creations. However the lucky few, like me, who witnessed his watercolour painting process are left with the indelible memory of that instant when Jim's powerful hand holding a WIndsor #000 sable brush (thinnest made) touched down on the paper surface. In a series of light fluid strokes emerged the most delicate images of Chickadee chicks sharing a flowering branch on a spring afternoon. Jim was a truly gifted creative artist and most sadly missed. - Posted by: Tibor Bodi (Manitoba Museum colleague) on: May 10, 2013

  • SORRY TO HEAR OF JAMES' PASSING. JAMES AND OTHER YOUNG FRIENDS ON PARK STREET GREW UP TOGETHER AND ENJOYED MANY YEARS OF FRIENDSHIP. I REMEMBER HIS EARLY YEARS OF ENTHUSIASM FOR THE OUTDOORS AND LOVE OF WILDLIFE, AND TRANSFORMING THAT TO PAPER. WE WERE ALWAYS MADE WELCOME BY JAMES' MOTHER AND THE SMELL OF GOOD RUSSIAN COOKING, AND ALWAYS OFFERED A GOOD BOWL OF RUSSIAN BORSCH. - Posted by: FRED STRELIEFF, KAMSACK/REGINA (CHILDHOOD FRIEND) on: May 04, 2013

  • My condolences and sympathies to the entire Carson family. I knew Jim through the sport of archery in the 80's and 90', and was fortunate to own one of his paintings. I had the utmost respect for his talent and loved all that he painted. He was a bit of a character whom I've thought of during the past years. RIP Jim. - Posted by: Leslie (knew him long ago) on: May 04, 2013
