PETER MCCARTHY June 1, 1946 May 5, 2013 It is with our deepest sadness that we announce the passing of Peter, a husband, father, grandfather, and humanitarian. Peter passed away peacefully at the Riverview Health Centre on Sunday, May 5, 2013 at the age of 66. Peter leaves his loving wife Joanne, his children Shawn (Lindie), and Colleen (Keith); his precious grandchildren, Madison, Easton, and Charlie. Peter was predeceased by his parents Isaac and Mary McCarthy, as well as his in-law Olive McLeod. Peter was born in England on June 1, 1946 later immigrating to Canada when he was five years old with both of his parents. Peter grew up in St. James graduating from high school at St. James Collegiate where he met his future wife Joanne. While in St. James, Peter became very involved in the Boy Scouts community acting as a leader and later as an organizer of an annual camp in the Big Whiteshell. Following high school Peter attended Red River Community College leading him to achieve his journeymen ticket as an electrician. Peter and Joanne were married in 1968 and would have celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary this coming June. Peter and Joanne moved to Transcona in 1975 where Peter was employed at the CNR shops, he continued to work there for 35 years until his retirement. Peter always gave back to his community in various volunteer capacities throughout his life such as the Winnipeg Children's Museum, youth sports, Folklorama, the Transcona Hi Neighbour Festival, and Habitat For Humanity. Habitat for Humanity had always been a favourite, Peter volunteered every summer for the past 20 years often using his own vacation time to assist in building homes for the less fortunate in Winnipeg. Through this involvement Peter was fortunate to also have opportunities to assist in repairing houses in a flood ravaged neighbourhood in New Orleans post Hurricane Katrina. As well, spending a week in the Yukon repairing water wells for the First Nation. In April of this year Peter was honoured for a selfless lifetime of volunteer work receiving the Mayor's Volunteer Service Award. Although he was ill he continued volunteering and was often seen Wednesdays at the Transcona Food Bank and Senior Dinner Program. Peter loved spending every summer at the cabin in Grand Marais with his family. He made many friends at the beach as well as gave back to that community by volunteering to help at the Grand Beach Sun Run and annual lip synch competition. Uncle Pete will be missed by his many nieces and nephews. He loved to be the center of attention at annual family events in Killarney at Don and Marion's, and Stoney Mountain at Larry and Wendy's. Over the past several years Peter cherished his friendship with Brian Neil, he loved watching sports in Brian's garage, and spending time together at the cabin. Peter also enjoyed traveling throughout Manitoba and Canada from coast to coast with Joanne. He loved football, his favourite teams were the Minnesota Vikings, and the Blue Bombers. After his retirement Peter took on a part time job at Home Depot, he enjoyed passing along his knowledge and expertise as well as the relationships he made with his co-workers. Peter is survived by family, friends, and fellow humanitarians, and he will be missed. A Celebration of Peter's life will be held on Monday, May 13, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at Wheeler Funeral Home, Cemetery & Crematorium 1800 Day Street.
