MAY BIRNBOIM Beloved sister, mother and grandmother, May Birnboim passed away at the Simkin Centre on May 10, 2013. May was born in Winnipeg on September 19, 1936, to Louis and Rose Shrom. After graduation from Tec Voc High School, May worked for a variety of organizations throughout her life, including Pioneer Women, B'nai Brith, and Winnipeg Transit. Through hard work and perseverance, she managed to keep a strong Jewish home, and to raise and educate her daughter Sharon. May was so very proud of Sharon's achievements, including her graduation from Joseph Wolinsky Collegiate - a Jewish education being of great importance to her - and later, her graduation from medical school. Most of all, she was proud of what a kind and caring person she had produced. For her part, Sharon has always felt that her accomplishments were, in so many ways, also those of her mother. Later in life, May was also blessed with three wonderful grandchildren, Shira, Aliza, and Max. That they too turned out to be such decent, caring, and able human beings remained an ongoing source of pride for her. In her later years, life became more difficult for May. She lost her dear brother Saul, and she herself suffered from a long and debilitating disease. But she persevered for many years, and remained a source of love and support for her family. She could not have done this without the love of her family in return, and Sharon and her husband Sid will always remember with gratitude the enormous kindness and devotion shown to May by her sister Faye, her brother Jack, brother-in-law Bill, and her sisters-in-law Donna and Helen May. May's family wishes to thank the health care professionals who helped May over the years, and in particular the staff of the Simkin Centre, Dr. Sheldon Koven, Carla, and May's caregiver Nelia. May will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. If so desired, donations in her memory may be made to the MS Society, the Simkin Centre, or a charity of one's choice. Graveside service was held at the Shaarey Zedek Cemetery on May 12, conducted by Rabbi A. Altein. Pallbearers were Sid Lerner, Max Lerner, Gary Brownstone, Rob Brownstone, David Shrom, and Daniel Kroft.
