MAURICE MARR November 14, 1924 - May 10, 2013 It is with great sadness that we, as a family, mourn the loss of our dear father Maurice (Moe) Marr who passed away on May 10, 2013 at the Saul and Claribel Simkin Centre at the age of 88. Maurice is survived by his three children: sons Hartley (Daneta) of Banff, AB and David of Winnipeg, MB, and daughter Sheryl of Calgary, AB. He is also survived by his six grandchildren: Tovah, Tara, Andrea, Joshua, Jared, and Jesse and three great-grandchildren: Connor, Avery, and Brady, as well as many nieces and nephews. Maurice was predeceased by his cherished wife of 60 years, Daisey Marr (nee Greenberg), his parents David and Hilda Marashinsky, his brothers Israel, Jacob, Phillip, Earle and Myron, and his grandson Joey Marr. Maurice was born November 14, 1924 in Winnipeg, MB. He moved to Portage la Prairie, MB with his wife and family in 1956. He opened their first of seven women's clothing stores called "Marr Fashions" which he owned and operated until retiring to Winnipeg in 1989. Moe was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather as well as a loyal friend to all who knew him. Moe was a firm believer in giving back to the community. He was actively involved and a committed member of the Portage la Prairie Jewish community, the Portage Rotary Club, Portage Chamber of Commerce and the Portage chapter of the S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A. where he sang in many concerts locally in a barber-shop quartet called "The Marshmellowes". Since moving to Winnipeg, Moe became an active member of the Temple Shalom Congregation and Choir. Moe will be remembered for his many strengths - his genuine kindness and generosity, his positive, caring attitude, his great sense of humour, his love of life and his strong devotion to his family and friends. Moe will be remembered as a gifted artist. His creative talents include drawing, woodworking, oil painting, and sculpting. Moe became one of the founding members of the Manitoba Institute of Sculptors and Artists - many of his sculptures have been displayed and sold in exhibitions in and around Winnipeg and in other parts of the world. The Marr family extends their sincere gratitude to all of the staff at the Saul and Claribel Simkin Centre for their continued care, compassion and support of our father. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Parkinson's Society; the Diabetes Society of Manitoba, and the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba.

Condolences & Memories (8 entries)

  • I will remember Moe at the Manitoba Institute of Sculptors, where I met him around 2000, I was a member of the studio, I was new in sculpting at that time. Moe was so nice person, passing his knowledge in sculpting. I just found he pass away. Rest in peace dear Moe. Maria - Posted by: Maria Dina (Friend ) on: Oct 17, 2022

  • Moe was, in my mind, the nicest person I've ever met. Within a few hours of meeting him I already knew I couldn't wait to join MISA and sculpt under his guidance. I never had a grandfather at an age I could appreciate it, and to me moe was the grandfather I never had. He inspired me more than anyone, to stick with my love of working with stone. - Posted by: Reid Bricker (Member and current president at MISA inc. • Maurice and Daisy were generous to me when I was in my last year of high school. They knew I did not have a lot of money but needed new clothes, so gave me a much appreciated discount. I still remember the cool "hipster skirt" they sold me! I am so sorry I never saw them after, and never saw his art. They were lovely people. My condolences to Sheryl, Hartley, David and all their families. - Posted by: Linda Litwack (Co-congregant in Portage la Prairie synagogue) on: May 24, 2013

  • Sorry to hear about the loss of your Dad. My condolences to your family. - Posted by: Barry McMillan (friend of David) on: May 21, 2013

  • So sorry to hear of Maurice's passing. Daisy and Maurice were very special to my family. They were wonderful to my mother and took care and watched over my younger sister Jo-Anne when Dad died and Mom had a stroke. My older sister was in Germany and I was in Edmonton and Jo was pretty much on her own.She was in University and Daisy and Maurice stepped in and watched over her for us. Maurice even gave Jo away at her wedding. Jo and I visited Maurice at his home in Winnipeg a few years ago. It was lovely. He told me I sounded like my mother. our family is very saddened by the death of this wonderful man. My love to the family. Marilee - Posted by: Marilee McKnight [Peakin] (friend) on: May 14, 2013

  • We have such fond memories of both Moe and Daisy. Just thinking about them, makes us smile. Their gentle and kind nature impacted us. - Posted by: Brian and Pam Scharfstein (Friends) on: May 12, 2013

  • Moe was a tremendous help in the short time I spent at MISA trying to learn carve stone. He had such enthusiasm for his carving that it was infectious. He was always kind and encouraging being generous with his time and advice. I appreciated his involvement with the studio, encouraging displays of our work and getting MISA noticed. He was very committed to the success and existence of the studio. There he was on the BT morning show at some incredible time in the morning, letting people know what the studio offered. It was a tremendous loss when he could no longer participate. Thank you Moe. - Posted by: Sharyn Morris (Former member of stone carving studio MISA) on: May 12, 2013
