Condolences & Memories (27 entries)

  • It is hard to express the feelings that I have for Dave Lyon. From my first encountering him at a Peace Garden Summer Camp through my days as a member of the Razorback Track Club, Dave and I shared a kinship that I will never forget. I don't get back to Winnipeg that often but on my next trip I want to go back alongside the river where we enjoyed some great runs. Rest in peace Dave! • I got to know Dave when I was the Canadian Jumps & Combined events coach 1974 to 1976,at a training camp in Tucson, Arizona in January 1975 where the carded athletes were training, we nicknamed Dave 'Gold Finger" [used to wear a big chain necklace] He was great company, good humor, hard working and a very good coach/administrator. - Posted by: Derek Boosey (A good friend and fellow coach) on: Jul 25, 2013

  • Edith, Sean, Andy (lovely wife), my heartfelt condolences to you all. Dl and I have many memories together. I was not a Razorback, yet there were many times over the years where he made me feel like one of the group. Thanks. He was one of the most lasting coaches at Peace Gardens, when he made Sandy Harper and I rerun the cross country course becaue we didn't run it right. Never forget the 24 hour relays at Minto. How about piling as many as we could in Al Ferguson's car to go for dinner at Kings on Pembina Hwy. Peace Gardens as a dorm dean, canteen girl, cleaner. In 1984 when he went off to the Olympics and came back with Olympic Pins and T-shirt for me. I still have the pins, and wore out the shirt. Many meets at Minto Armouries, the Pan Am track, Max Bell, Steinbach, Knights of Columbus, Tribune Games, to mention a few. The memories just keep flooding my brain. Many drinks after track meets. Your memories will live on with me forever. Thanks for helping to mould me into the person I've become. Will sure miss you. Rest in Peace untill we meet again. All my love, hugs, and prayers to your family. - Posted by: Marilyn "Mouse" Fraser (Friend, athlete, co worker, official. ) on: Jun 06, 2013

  • As a former Oak Park Raider, Winnipeg Raider and Peace Garden Sports Camp staff.... I have known you for most of my life. My thoughts are with your family and friends. - Posted by: Cyndi Kohuska (Former runner) on: Jun 02, 2013

  • Dave was never afraid to roll up his sleeves and get down to work... that drive and pursuit of excellence as a builder of sport saw him inducted into the Hall of Fame and he gave that same effort as a volunteer on the Dinner Committee after that... my sympathies to Edith and their sons, Dave will be missed. - Posted by: Rick Brownlee (MB Sports Hall of Fame) on: Jun 01, 2013

  • To Dave Lyon's loved ones and all who were influenced by him : Today, May 15th, 2013 was a journey especially to Churchill Drive, Winnipeg, one of '' our Razorback stomping grounds '' to reflect. This, like all learning stages of life was a reminder of a gentleman whose passion for life and his love of people, especially youth is fondly remembered. We who had the privilege of interacting with him know full well he made a positive impact on our lives. Rest in Peace Dave Lyon and we will value your honesty, integrity, guidance and perseverance. - Posted by: frances krawchuk (former amateur athlete) on: May 15, 2013

  • Mr. Lyon was my track coach at Elmwood High School back in the 70s. He was definitely one of a kind and knew how to get that extra last ounce of effort out of his athletes. Not always in a subtle way but it definitely did the trick! You could hear that booming voice clear across the track and no team was prouder to have Mr. Dave Lyon as their track coach. Thanks for the many coaching lessons which translated into life lessons Dave. I will always remember you fondly. A job well done. Sincerely, Tim Sullivan - Posted by: Tim Sullivan (friend/student) on: May 14, 2013
