HILDA YANOFSKY March 4, 1931 - May 3, 2013 Peacefully, on May 3, 2013 with her family by her side, Hilda Yanofsky passed away at the Health Sciences Centre at 82 years of age. She will be sadly missed, and lovingly remembered by her children - Rochelle Yanofsky (John King), Michael Yanofsky and Heather Gordon; grandchildren - Jeffrey, Kaitlyn, Courtney, Andrew Jr., Jenna and Adam; special friend - Izzy Minuk and numerous cousins and friends. Hilda was predeceased by her parents and by her beloved husband Abe. Hilda and Abe enjoyed an active life travelling as well as spending summers at their Winnipeg Beach cottage where many fond memories were made with children and grandchildren. Hilda loved cooking and was known for her vast collection of cook books, kitchen appliances and gadgets. She also had a passion for writing. In addition to journaling she beautifully expressed herself by writing poetry; a poem that she wrote in 1974 is included below. A special thank you goes out to Hilda's personal care aides, including Emma, Merlyn, Emily, Jessie, Modelyn and Marcelina. They all took loving care of Hilda until the day she died. A special thank you also goes out to the WRHA home care co-ordinator, and the staff at the Shaftesbury Park Residence for all of their assistance and kindness. And a sincere thank you to Drs. Van Ameyde, Prober, and Hobson, who looked after Hilda for many years, and to Dr. Sochocki and the staff at the Health Sciences Centre who looked after her in her final days. A funeral service was held May 6 at the Congregation Etz Chayim Synagogue followed by interment at Shaarey Zedek Cemetery. Donations in Hilda's memory may be made to CancerCare Manitoba or to the Parkinson's Society of Manitoba. "In Retrospect" by Hilda Yanofsky As I approach the twilight of my life And my many memories pass in review I have not one regret for the things I have done Only the things I did not do I've felt within me the stirring of unborn life I've experienced the miracle of birth I've been touched by the awesome finality of death I've had my quota of sadness and mirth In my time, I've known kinship and loneliness I've known poverty and comparative wealth I've felt exuberant elation, and soul-crushing depression I've been courted by both illness and health I've been consumed by the fires of love in my youth And I've hated with equal passion I've given of myself and have received in return Kindness, warmth, and compassion Like most, my life has been a varied bag A conglomeration of both bad and good I've made my mistakes and I've taken my falls But I've tried to be the best that I could I've felt, I've touched. I've lived, my friends And when my days on earth are through I'll not reproach myself for the things I've done But for the things that I did not do

The world has lost some sparkle. Your mother's smile lit up the room. And her style was unmatched. She did not age, even as the years added up. Still so beautiful. I still can see her sitting, holding the flowers she had received each day. Not sure what was more beautiful...her roses, though fresh and new paled beside her. It was a pleasure to be part of her time at Shaftesbury Park. Keeping you in my prayers. Vivian Bicknell-Lynne - Posted by: Vivian Bicknll-Lynne () on: May 20, 2013

I remember with fondness a trip to Israel with my husband Bill and several city councillors, including Abe and Hilda. We had many good times together and saw fabulous sights. Hilda was always a lively, interesting companion. - Posted by: Helen Norrie (A friend from Wpg. City Council days) on: May 12, 2013

Sending you my sincere condolences on the passing of your mother and Baba. I remember both Abe and Hilda from my time at City Hall and the Manitoba Municipal Board. They were both lovely people. Thank you for sharing some of your Mother's touching poetry. - Posted by: Shirley Timm-Rudolph (former Winnipeg City Councillor) on: May 11, 2013
