Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryWILLIAM PETER MIECHKOTA William Peter Miechkota, age 72, entered into eternal life on May 11, 2013 at LaVerendrye Hospital as a consequence of cancer. Born April 8, 1941 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and having been raised in Barwick, Ontario, Peter attended high school in Fort Frances. His career began at the age of 18 as a signal helper with the Canadian National Railway in Sioux Lookout, Ontario and after 16 years of service as a Signal Supervisor his job was eliminated. Peter was then asked to work for the Federal Government as a Signal System Officer with the Railway Transport Committee. This work began in Moncton as his headquarters, in the Atlantic region. Peter enjoyed his work with the Federal Government meeting with the railway and road authority and discussing the safety of railway and road crossings. After 16 years, in 1986, he transferred to the Prairie region with Winnipeg as his headquarters. Peter retired at Winnipeg in 1996. Peter's special interests included playing musical instruments, participating in sports, gardening, fishing, and reading. Peter enjoyed spending the past 10 years wintering in Florida, assisting his family in the Ukraine and helping some of them to move to Winnipeg. Peter was a member of the Lions Club and held the position as President. He was also the treasurer of the Chamber of Commerce at Hornepayne, Ontario, and an active member of the Canadian Order of Foresters in Thunder Bay, Ontario. Peter knew the value of community service and thus was involved with the Catholic Church of the Holy Protection teaching children musical instruments (mandolin, guitar and accordion). Peter was predeceased by his father Michael, his mother Annie, his brother Roy, and his sister Marie Hamilton. Surviving are his brother Daniel and his wife Velma, and three daughters Kim Haldorson, Brenda and her husband Jeff Hamilton, and Peggy. Peter is also survived by two grandchildren: Joseph and Jennifer Christie. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation towards the Canadian Cancer Society. Full funeral services are as follows: Viewing will take place on Wednesday, May 15 at 7:00 p.m. at Knysh (Cropo) Funeral Chapel located at 1442 Main Street in Winnipeg. The funeral service will be held at St. Joseph's Ukrainian Catholic Church located at 250 Jefferson Ave. in Winnipeg on Thursday, May 16 at 10:00 a.m. with lunch to follow at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. Peter's family life was where his happiness flowed from - spending precious time with his daughters and grandchildren. His leisure pastimes included gardening, playing cards and checkers, not to mention being a jack of all trades. Peter was so very appreciative for the freedom and opportunities that Canada blessed him and his family with. As a benevolent man, Peter never forgot his Ukrainian heritage and thus provided a very compelling gift to his homeland relatives. Peter will be sadly missed by his loving daughters, grandchildren and family here and in the Ukraine and friends....
