MICHAEL ARTHUR COOK October 4, 1933 - May 13, 2013 Sadly Mike (Mickey) Cook passed away peacefully, with family by his side, at the Grace Hospital on Monday, May 13, 2013 at the age of 79 years. Mike will be dearly missed and forever, lovingly remembered by his wife of 59 years, Pat; children Michael (Velda), Mary, Teresa (Kevin) Leathwood, David (Val), Desmond (Shirley), John, Piper, Monica (Shannon Ennis) and Pat (Margje) Barter-Cook; 15 grandchildren, Steven, Bradley (Katie Cameron), Matthew, Daniel, Melanie, Sydney, Bryan, Elijah, Molly, Roan, Maggie, Tereasa, Shae, Elijah and Benji; one great-grandchild Lily (who lit up his world); sister Kathy (Ray) Morris; brothers Rollie (Sandy) and Roger (Susan); sister-in-law Sheila; brothers-in-law Des Findlay and Ken Burwash, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Arthur and Alice Cook, parents-in-law Patrick and Katherine Lynch, and siblings, Anne and John Melvin, Alice Findlay, Edward Cook, Kay Burwash and Owen Lynch. Dad was born in Winnipeg into a loving, hard-working family, rich in faith. He attended St. Edward's School and St. Paul's High School. He met and fell in love with Pat Lynch. They were married on April 24, 1954. Dad set to work, intent on providing for Mom. He worked at General Bakeries, delivering bread, house to house. Many people can re-tell the hilarious stories of getting past the dogs that seemed to be in every yard! Dad moved on to Sears, where he sold sewing machines. He took pride in all he did and made sure he did it right! He started a successful insurance agency with his long-time friend, Tom Anderson. Dad spent the next 30 years in the insurance industry. He was a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather! His other love was singing. He was a long-time member of S.P.E.B.Q.S.A and sang with the Golden Chordsmen Barbershop Chorus. He would break into song under almost any circumstance and loved every minute of it. Prayers will be held on Tuesday evening, May 21, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. in Blessed John XXIII Roman Catholic Church, 3390 Portage Avenue at Rouge Road. I met Mike and Pat shortly after moving to Winnipeg. They were at a pro-life event and even though I was a stranger to them, they took it upon themselves to drive me home. I was embarassed about inconveniencing them and tried to insist that I could get home of my own accord, but the more I insisted, the more they gently persisted and drove a considerable distance out of their way to take me to my apartment on Furby St. It was pretty obvious that they were very special people, and my heart goes out to the family in this time of loss. My prayers are with you. sherry - Posted by: sherry matteotti (friend) on: May 24, 2013

I have many clear recollections of Mike from my eight years with Winnipeg's Golden Chordsmen during the 1980's. I can yet visualize his ready smile, keen sense of humour and warmth of personality. He was a very dedicated Barbershopper who loved quartet singing. I am saddened to learn of his passing and express my sympathy with his wife and family. Our world would benefit from many more who are as he was. - Posted by: Paul Brennan (Former member of Winnipeg's Barbershop Chorus (still singing in Halfax since leaving Winnipeg in 19) on: May 18, 2013

Mike was a long time friend who I met in the late 70's through our association with the Winnipeg Barbershop singers. He was the lead singer for our Quartet, Suburban Knights for many years. I looked up to him because he was much taller and also he was able to keep our songs in key. He had that Irish sense of humour and over the years contributed much to the many sings and shows with our Quartet and the Golden Chordsmen Chorus. Our condolences go out to Pat and the family. - Posted by: Vern and Aggie Fast, Surrey BC (Friends) on: May 16, 2013
