SANDRA LYNN SLOAN Sandra Lynn Sloan passed away peacefully on May 13, 2013 after over 60 years dealing with diabetes and its complications. Sandra was a secretary at the Northwest Company 19 years culminating as the secretary to the Vice President of Marketing and Supervisor of the secretarial pool. She left a legacy as a political and social activist, writer and support group leader helping patients, families, and clinicians to better understand and deal with diabetes. Sandra led a march on the legislature of long-time survivors of diabetes to raise awareness about the burdens of the disease, which resulted in a provincial government decision to provide sufficient support for blood testing strips. She was a longtime member of Saint Barnabas Anglican Church and was the parish reporter for the Rupertsland News. In her youth, Sandra was an avid swimmer, tennis player, and member of the Winnipeg Canoe Club. She spent many hours at the family cabin at Hillside Beach and enjoying meals at the Half Moon on the way home. She is survived by Rick Yackel, her husband, love, and partner for 18 years, her brother and sister-in-law Jeff and Vesna Sloan and her nieces Elizabeth and Marilyn and nephew Alan. Sandra is also survived by countless friends whose lives she touched and her cat Sox. Sandra was predeceased by her parents, Olive and Elmer Sloan of Winnipeg, and her sister Vivian of Minneapolis and beloved dogs Chico and Taffy. A celebration of Sandra's life will be held at Saint Barnabas Anglican Church, 730 McPhillips Street on Thursday, May 16 at 2:00 p.m., with interment at Chapel Lawn Memorial, 4000 Portage Avenue thereafter.

  • Very sorry to hear of Sandra's passing. She inspired us all to improve our lives by taking ownership of our diabetes. My sincere condolences to Rick, her family, and of course Sox; a very forgiving cat who watched in horror as my guide dog ate the cat food. • Beautiful photo of Sandra. Gosh I so wish I had known her years ago but thankful to have known her even for so short a time even though from a distance. I watched avidly for emails from her. Sandra certainly had an impressive life and achieved much in spite of her diabetes not only for herself but others inflicted in the same way. The Sloan family can be so proud of her. Deepest sympathies to Rick her brother Jeff and family (and Sox!). She will still be an inspiration to you all. - Posted by: Kathleen (Kathie) Benfell (Second cousin) on: May 16, 2013
