Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDONALD GORDON MATHIESON Passed away in Kingston on Wednesday, May 15, 2013 at the age of 88. Born in Winnipeg in 1924, Don spent his early years in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The only son of Margret and Robert Mathieson. University years were spent in Kingston, Ontario where he attended Queens University, and received a bachelors degree in commerce. He returned to Winnipeg after graduating in 1947. He began his career working for the Great West Life Assurance Co. where he met his wife Dorothy. He stayed with the company until his retirement in 1983. Don was a pioneer in computers and went on to become the manager of computer education for the company. He predicted personal computers as early as 1966 - long before any such devices existed and was passionate about his work. He loved jazz and was an authority on the work of his favourite musician Duke Ellington. Don travelled extensively with Dorothy in both North America and Europe, where England became the favourite destination. Retiring to Kingston, Don consulted for a short time with Empire Life and finally retired completely where he continued to enjoy travelling with Dorothy. Don is preceded by his wife Dorothy, and is survived by his two sons, Peter of Kingston, and Evan of Vancouver. He will be sadly missed by his three grandchildren Heather, Courtney, and John. As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated. Funeral arrangements entrusted to the care of the GORDON F. TOMPKINS FUNERAL HOME - Township Chapel, Kingston, ON. (613) 546-5150.

I had the privilege of visiting with Don at his home this past Christmas. It was so good to see him (the previous time was in 2009 with Marjorie when my son, Chris graduated from Loyalist College, Police Foundations). We reminisced at Christmas and he was so curious about my current educational endeavours (MSW-Gerontology candidate). He was very encouraging and supportive, as I tried to be to him, asking about any needs or concerns he might have had. As always, he made me feel welcome in his home. I will remember him always as a true gentleman: intelligent, kind and respectful. It was truly a pleasure to know him. God bless. - Posted by: Barb Kwasnicia (Daughter of Don's cousin, Marjorie Kozak (nee Mathieson)) on: May 18, 2013
