SOPHIA (JESSIE) HARE KOWPAK Peacefully on Friday, May 10, 2013, Sophia (Jessie) Kowpak passed away at Deer Lodge Centre at the age of 93 years. Left to cherish Jessie's memory are her two children, seven grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her brother John, and his twin sister Mary. Jessie was born Sophia Abramiuk in the Seech/Olha area of Manitoba, December 27, 1919. She was raised and educated in the town of Oak River, Manitoba, as Jessie Wertepney. She worked as household help on several local farms, and in Brandon in food services. In 1942, Jessie married Edward Alexander Hare and they raised two children, Edward John Hare and Alicia Mary Isabel Hare (now A. M. Isabel Weseen) on their farm in Oak River, where she was an active farming partner for many years. She worked in the local Glinz's Store after they retired from farming, and she was a member of the Oak River United Church and the Ladies Auxiliary. In 1964 Ed passed away and Jessie moved to Winnipeg, where she worked at Jack's Tom Boy Store for several years. In 1972 she married Henry Kowpak (deceased), and they lived in St. Vital spending many summers fishing at their cabin at Wendigo in Lac Du Bonnet. Jessie was a member of St. Mary's Road United Church, and regularly delivered Meals on Wheels. She liked to travel and went on several guided tours through Europe, was a member of numerous seniors groups, and was well-known for her love of playing Bridge. In later years, with failing memory but still with a sense of humour, she lived at The Eastern Star Chalet, The Rosewood, and Deer Lodge Centre. Interment will be held in the Oak River Cemetery later this summer, details to be arranged. The family is very grateful for the help that Jessie received and the caring staff at the residences in her later years. Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Sorry to hear of Jessie's passing. We enjoyed Carpet Bowling with her. She was a very friendly Lady. We had many "good times". We did other things together until we lost track of her when she moved from The Eastern Star Chalet. We Will always remember her and her Happy ways.......
