JOAN RUTH HACKETT Joan Ruth Hackett passed away peacefully at the Berkley West Convalescent Hospital, Santa Monica, California on March 18, 2013, at the age of 91 years. Joan was born in Langruth, Manitoba on December 9, 1921 to Henrietta Hackett (nee Knapp) and John Hackett. In 1922 she moved to Winnipeg with her parents and brother, Alan. Joan is survived by her sister Vera of Los Angeles, California, niece Kerry Bartlett (Allan), great-niece Tracy Bartlett and great-nephews Bryan Bartlett and Darcy Bartlett, all of Winnipeg, Manitoba. Also left to mourn her passing are three stepchildren, Larry (Cathy), Virginia and Otto III in the United States and other relatives in England. Joan was predeceased by her parents John and Henrietta Hackett, and her brother John Alan Hackett. Joan graduated from Daniel McIntyre Collegiate in 1938 where she had been elected to the high school council and had been part of the opera cast. In 1946 she received a diploma for Practical Costume Design from the Maxwell School for Costume Design. After graduation Joan worked for Canada Safeway before leaving for Los Angeles in 1950 with her sister. She worked for Los Angeles fashion designer Edith Small and then Aircraft Sales before moving to New York with her sister in 1953. She worked for Creative Playthings for nine months and then spent two months travelling in Europe with her sister. After returning from Europe, the two of them drove across the country, settling permanently in Los Angeles in July, 1954. Joan worked for Host International (Marriot Corporation) as an Executive Secretary until her retirement. After retirement Joan became a member of the Brentwood Residence Association serving on the Board of Directors for many years. Joan had a wonderful sense of humour, loved animals, enjoyed music (especially classical), gardening, sewing and art. She took many classes in art at the L.A. Art Center. She travelled extensively with her sister and, over her lifetime, made many wonderful friends. Her sister will remember her forever; as they had such a great love for each other. She will also be missed by the many friends acquired over the years. May she rest in peace after a wonderful life. The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Berkley West and Hospice Partners. Their true dedication, patience, compassion and care ensured that Joan's stay was made easier. Thank you. Cremation has taken place and there will be a private family service followed by the interment in the family plot at Waverley Memorial Gardens, 1501 Waverley Street, Winnipeg. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Joan's memory be made to a charity of your choice.
