LAILA KESSELMAN 1926 - 2013 Laila Kesselman gracefully passed away on May 21, 2013. Through her life, Laila was fiercely devoted to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, her community and her city. Laila was born to Frank and Bessie Buchwald on December 25, 1926. She attended the University of Manitoba and earned her Bachelor of Science degree at a time when few women attended or completed their post-secondary education. She married Lawrence Kesselman in 1948 and they raised four children together until Lawrence's untimely death in 1973. For the next 40 years, Laila lived her life her way and was a frequent supporter of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and Winnipeg's live theatre. She was deeply involved in Canadian Hadassah-Wizo and had a keen interest in the Jewish community. Laila oversaw Lawrence's shoe stores - Sterling Shoes and Miss Sterling Shoes - until selling the businesses and teaching herself bookkeeping and office management. She worked with lawyer Ken Halprin until retiring in 2009. Laila loved reading British mysteries, watching golf and comparing the merits of the CFL to the NFL. Laila was predeceased by her husband Lawrence, her parents Frank and Bessie and her brother Harold. She leaves four children: Murray (Jane McIsaac), Ted (Jane Meadwell), Bob (Gina Zaccardi) and Shelley (Michael Brager), nine grandchildren: Lindsay, Andrew, Michael, Emily, Stephen, Sarah, Rachel, Daniel and Laura; great-grandchildren Isaac and Zoe, brother Martin (Mira), and sister-in-law Dee. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday May 24 at Shaarey Zedek Synagogue with interment at Shaarey Zedek Cemetery. A meal of consolation will be held at the Shaarey Zedek Synagogue following interment. There will be a gathering of family and friends at 328 Oxford Street, Friday evening, May 24 from 7:00 p.m to 9:00 p.m. No flowers please. If you wish, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba or the charity of your choice.
