• Dear Shewman family I was deeply saddened to learn of your mother's passing and equally disappointed to miss her memorial service. Arlene was a long service volunteer with the Canadian Cancer Society's annual door to door campaign. For 36 years Arlene was a dedicated volunteer. She began volunteering with the Cancer Society in 1972 until her move in 2008. I met your dear mother around 2002 as Arlene was the lead in her apartment building raising funds for the community canvass. I enjoyed our annual April visits. She was very particular about her bookkeeping and always had a detailed fundraising report. She teased me on one of those early visits. Arlene insisted that I reconcile the cash before I left and evidently had an issue adding without a calculator. She said to me 'you don't do this often do you?' After that I made certain to come with a calculator so I didn't embarrass myself.
