OLGA PETTY With deep sadness, we announce the passing of Olga Petty on Monday, May 20, 2013 at 88 years of age. Predeceased by her parents, Anna and Wasyl Prokopchuk; loving husband Michael; brother Peter (Olga) Proctor, and sister Mary (John) Dacey. She is survived by son Michael, and daughters Katherine (Al) Kaus and Linda Petty. Olga grew up in Winnipeg's North End, immersed in its vibrant Ukrainian community. Friendships she made there sustained her until the end. Married in 1947, she and Michael relocated to East Kildonan in 1954. Olga took great pride in the home she created for her family on Kildonan Drive - her attention to detail is legendary - and was a generous hostess to the many friends entertained there. She was a parishioner at St. Alphonsus Church for over five decades, and was an active member of the Catholic Women's League for much of that time. Strong and independent, Olga remained busy and involved well into her later years. Her passion for card games found expression both in the city (she was, for some time, a member of two bridge clubs simultaneously) and at her beloved Wanasing Beach where rounds of "double solitaire" brought out her competitive spirit. "The Lake" was a vital part of Olga's life for 30 years, where afternoons in the sun leavened the responsibilities of motherhood, and berry or mushroom picking expeditions were launched. The mushrooms were not for immediate enjoyment, but packed and frozen to play a key role in traditional family Christmas dinners. Another joy was wintering down south with "the Gang", first to Brownsville, TX and later to Phoenix, AZ (with side trips to Vegas!). Olga withstood the indignities of old age with stoic grace and good humour, and her resilience was an inspiration to many. She rarely failed to deflect attention from herself and shared her pride in her family to anyone who'd listen. We will miss you!! The family thanks the staff at Maples Personal Care Home, One West, for their caring attention during Olga's last year. According to her wishes, cremation has taken place. Funeral mass to be celebrated on Thursday, May 30, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Alphonsus Roman Catholic Church, 341 Monroe Ave., Winnipeg R2K 1H2. Private interment at Glen Eden Cemetery at a later time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Olga's memory to St. Alphonsus Church; Health Sciences Centre Foundation, MS107-820 Sherbrook St., Winnipeg, MB R3A 1R9; Ukrainian Cultural and Educational Foundation, 184 Alexander Ave. E., Winnipeg, MB R3B 0L6; or a charity of your choice.

Bruce was Olga's neighbour at the Maples Personal Care Home. We were introduced to your Mom by Janet Cook, whose friendship your mother cherished. I spoke to Olga whenever I would see her. We were deeply saddened and shocked to hear of your Mom's passing. The last time we saw your Mom was when Michael was in town and we were all sitting outside enjoying the sun. Your Mom was a wonderful lady with charm, a great spirit and a positive attitude. I will miss seeing her when I come to visit Bruce. You are all in our prayers. - Posted by: Bruce and Delores Lackey (acquaintance) on: May 29, 2013

Kathy, I remember talking with you many times about your mom and hearing stories of you and her going berry picking and having to fill up your pails. You took such good care of your mom as she grew sicker over the years and you were always there for her. I was so proud of witnessing your loving dedication to your mom. Our hearts go out to you and Al and the rest of your family. You have lots of memories of your mom and you have many friends who are thinking of you to help you get through this difficult time.
