JOE CANTOR
Born: Jan 07, 1925
Date of Passing: May 18, 2013
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJOE CANTOR It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved father, Zaida and brother on May 18, 2013 at the age of 88. Dad will be forever loved and missed by his daughters Merle Rosenberg (Jerry Sawyer), Rhonda Cantor (Neil Murray), sons Edward (Heather) and Michael (Brenlee). He will be dearly missed by his grandchildren Sari, Daniel, Karlee, Lexi, Ryan, Matthew and Lainee whom he loved with all of his heart. He will also be dearly missed by his twin brother Oscar, his brother Lee and his sister Lily Prince. Dad was predeceased by our mom Leah of 47 years, his parents Edward and Sara, his son-in-law Larry Rosenberg and his brother-in-law David Prince. Dad was born in Poland on January 7, 1925 and moved to Winnipeg in 1928. His father, Edward founded Cantor's Grocery in the early 1940s. Together, with his twin brother Oscar, he successfully ran the business for over 70 years. Whereas most independent grocers have now become extinct, Cantor's Grocery remains a thriving Winnipeg institution and represents a true monument of his success. Dad's success was a direct result of his impeccable work ethic, sheer brilliance and compassion for the community that he served. A source of great pride for him was the meat department, which remains an integral component of the company's success. In the 1980s he rose to the top of the local business world when he fought to have the milk pricing boards abolished. He felt items of necessity, such as milk should be accessible to all individuals, especially for those who are less fortunate. Through legislative changes he was able to eliminate the minimum price of milk. Over the years, he continued to wage battles in an effort to bring favourable pricing to his customers on other key food products including bread and fish. Working at the store brought Dad a great deal of personal satisfaction. In particular, he enjoyed meeting and greeting the customers and engaging in conversation focusing on a multitude of topics. Indeed, Cantor's Grocery evolved into a social hub that has made him one of Winnipeg's most recognizable individuals. By many, he was described to have achieved iconic status. His son Edward will continue his legacy and uphold the principles that he had embraced. Dad was a caring, devoted and generous husband, father, Zaida and brother whose commitment and devotion to his family paralleled his passion and dedication for his work. Despite working hard at the store Monday to Saturday, Dad worked equally hard on Sundays at home emphasizing the importance of family cohesiveness. He was instrumental in coordinating and maintaining our weekly Sunday breakfasts and suppers. In the beginning, Sunday suppers were held in our parents' home but in Dad's later years, we have taken over this tradition which continues today. His generosity was unyielding as no matter how large our family grew he ensured that everyone was always included. During our time together Dad always connected with each of us, looking for an update on how our week went. He was our hero - we all adored him and he adored us. Our Dad was a vibrant and energetic man whose life was cut short. For that, we are all overcome with grief, sadness and sorrow. However, he lived a full life establishing a highly successful business and was also very fortunate to see his family prosper. For that, we are grateful. Nonetheless, our hearts are broken. Dad, we all love you and miss you so much. Funeral services were held at the Shaarey Zedek Synagogue, Monday, May 20, 2013. Pallbearers were Sari Rosenberg, Karlee Rosenberg, Daniel Glesby, Ryan Cantor, Jerry Sawyer and Neil Murray. Donations in Dad's memory may be made to the Larry Rosenberg Research Fund, St. Boniface Hospital Research Foundation (phone: 204-237-2067).

We were in our 20’s back in the day and used to shop at cantors all The time as we just lived around the corner. Joe & Oscar were like Two peas in a pod. They seemed to get along very well. We got to talking About them last week after we saw the commercial advertising cantors quality meats and thought...mmmm maybe they are still alive. We looked at the passages and knowing they lived a good life. Still sad to see they had both passed on . Happy to see Joes son has taken Over the business as we always had the feeling that FAMILY meant a lot To him. May they both Rest In Peace & we are sure their families have Many happy memories. Next time we go down Logan we will make a point to stop in as we have never been into the new store. - Posted by: Rose & Ross (Old customers from Blake gardens) on: Jun 01, 2020

It was very sad to read of Joe's passing. My family lived on gallagher ave. directly across from Cantor's and it was an important part of our lives. When my dad died Joe and Oscar kept on sending my mother her Friday grocery order until she was on her feet again. Cantor's made the neighborhood a real community and a man like Joe made the world a better place. - Posted by: marilyn (customer) on: Jun 27, 2013

Richard and I remember Joe as a very kind and helpful person. We shopped at Cantor's for many years as our children were growing up. Joe was one of the kindest people we knew. Many a time we would have gone hungry if not for Joe. Thank you Joe you will be missed, Each time we came to the store there was Joe at the checkout with a greeting for one and all. Our deepest condolences go out to the family. - Posted by: M Balanuik (customer) on: May 28, 2013

Thank you Mr. Cantor for being a pillar to the Weston community. A man who never gave up on helping his neighbourhood and customers. I too remember when he used to allow customers credit, which helped alot of families out. I remember ever since I was a baby going to the store with my Mom on a Saturday morning to grocery shop and seen Joe and Oscar there everytime. Joe will be missed and pray for Oscar's health. - Posted by: A. Wood (Customer) on: May 27, 2013

I remember living across the street from Cantor's store and going each evening in late 1956 to have tea with Sara at her home and eating boxes of Matza, my craving at the time as I was pregnant, Joe and Oscar and their mom were very good to me during that time. Rest In Peace Joe.... - Posted by: rosalie larcombe (neighbour and customer) on: May 26, 2013

I grew up on Gallagher Avenue in the '60's and like many of the kids in the neighbourhood was hired by Joe to work at the store. At age 15 this was my first real job. Although I and the others from the area didn't know it then, Joe was able to instill in us a work ethic that sustains us to this day. I live in BC now but was visiting Winnipeg 2 years ago and stopped into the store hoping to see Joe and thank him. I didn't know if he would remember or recognize me or not, but I think he did because during our brief conversation he said "you've lost your hair". I am glad I stopped in. Joe is and will always remain a "Weston Icon" and has had a positive influence on more lives than we can imagine. My sincere condolences to his family and many friends. - Posted by: Doug Clemis (Former employee/neighbour) on: May 26, 2013

I remember how I'd order groceries by what was on sale only. That comprised my order and saved me a lot of money and I didn't have to pay for delivery as I didn't have a car. He truly cared about the little guy, that is a true testament to him and the wealth of people who respected him our community as a whole has lost a good man. - Posted by: Frances Boux (customer) on: May 26, 2013

My grandmother spoke very highly about the Cantor's name. She had groceries delivered to her apartment in the 80's. Her favorite was minute steak and boiled potatoes. Now, I have been coming to Cantor's for my groceries, and always think of her when I come. Joe will sadly be missed by many. - Posted by: Katie () on: May 26, 2013

Family & Friends - I have been employed by the Cantor Family for the last 5+ years. Joe will be missed tremendously by the front end staff and myself. He was such a wonderful, humorous man. There are soooo many stories I could share as many of us could. (Thank you to all for sharing in the letter box) It's been a hard first week at the store, as most of our regulars know...We shared a few tears in the last days. Thank you for your love and compassion. It always took at least a year before Joe would learn your name, in his ways employees came and went and if you lasted a year or more you were accepted and he would start an interest in you. I on the other hand was Joe's Chicken Girl in the beginning and he was fond of me almost immediately. My hard work and determination has made me what I am today. I thank Joe for my success he saw me for someone to trust. Not all saw Joe as a kind, gentle, and understanding man. He made sure that everyone including myself knew he was still the BOSS. But behind the stern mean man was always a kind, funny, gentle, and proud family man. You have always been an inspiration to me. Thank you again, to the whole family...I hope I make you proud just as I did your father. Forever Remembered <3 May you rest in peace my friend :) - Posted by: Charlynne (Assistant Store Manager) on: May 26, 2013

My family has been going to Cantors for years. A few years ago my mom and I where shopping and we had Joe helping us that day I remember my mom asking him when he was going to retire. His response was "I'll keep working till the man upstairs calls me up." I find it very fitting that he got to finish his work for the day before the man upstairs called him up. He will forever be missed in the hearts of his customers. R.I.P Joe - Posted by: T.J. (Customer) on: May 25, 2013

My mother and step-dad, Ollie and Bud Duffin, loved shopping at Cantor's and talking to Joe and Oscar. The Cantors would always advertise in the Weston Banner, a community newspaper, overseen by my Mom and Dad. Mom went around to Weston businesses to pay for advertising, so Weston residents could keep informed as to what was happening in their neighbourhood. Joe was always more than willing and generous and enjoyed helping Weston be the best that it could be. - Posted by: Diana (former Weston resident) on: May 25, 2013

I lived across the street from Cantor's when I grew up. And been from a low income family Joe helped many many people out in the community by letting people charge their groceries from cheque to cheque. If it was not for him and his brother Oscar being so kind to so many families I would hate to think of how some people would have gotten by for food in those days. I saw Joe about 2 months ago after so many years and had the chance to talk to him. I was happy to know he remembered me. I'm sorry to hear about his passing, he will be sadly missed by many people. In the 70's I lived in the big house on Bury St. To keep my mentally challenged sister occupied while my mother shopped she would first retrieve a fudgesicle from the freezer. At the checkout she simply presented the wrapper to make payment. No problem. Joe always made a point of chatting directly with my sister. A very kind act. At a time of great instability in our lives Cantor's store provided consistency. Customers will remember the little things and smile when they think of Joe. - Posted by: L. I am a customer. I would come in every week or two. I always talk to your Dad while I would help him pack my groceries. The last day was Thursday before he passed. I was talking about my house and me trying to sell it. He rubbed my arm for luck and said next time you come in you will tell me that your house sold. Well guess what my house sold the next day. He was a very amazing man and very interesting to talk to. I am sure going to miss him. You have my deepest sympathy. - Posted by: Julie Cowie (Customer) on: May 25, 2013

The greater the loss, the greater the love. How well I remember the wonderful service every one received from Joe and Oscar. I have lived in BC for many years now and there is no store like Cantor's. - Posted by: Rita (Castello) Sutton (Former Customer) on: May 25, 2013

It was truly an honour to live next door to Joe. I would enjoy chatting with him and Oscar as they relaxed on a sunny Sunday afternoon sitting in their garage watching the world go by. Joe always had a twinkle in his eye and a good story to tell about his youth and life in business. He will be sorely missed by all the members of our little community. - Posted by: Sid Robinovitch (Next door neighbour) on: May 25, 2013

I was sad to hear of Joe's passing. I had just seen him the week before, he was sitting on the bench by the cash register. Joe was a very nice man always talking to his customers, laughing and explaining things to you about meat and other things. He was a man that is and should be respected. Joe and his brother fought for the customers in his community and that we should always remember. I pray for peace and comfort for his family at this time. - Posted by: Sonia (customer) on: May 25, 2013

As a child of a working poor family on Gallagher Ave. - I remember how Cantor's (Joe in particular) allowed us credit for groceries in the early 60's. Even as a little girl, I saw his kindness and respect to us and many of the families in the community. The "little" store on the corner was always a hub of activity, relationships and great deals. Joe was truly a remarkable man. - Posted by: R. Paxton (former resident of Weston area) on: May 25, 2013
