(MARGARET) IRIS MERRILL (nee MCKAY) 1909-2013 In loving memory of a wonderful, generous and thoughtful woman, daughter, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. Margaret Iris Merrill, passed from our lives peacefully at the Convalescent Home of Winnipeg, in her 105th year, on Wednesday, May 15. Left to cherish her memory are her loving son and daughter Richard and Glenda, her daughter-in-law Joyce, her granddaughters Janell Hartley (Steward) Kanata, ON, Lori Merrill (Ian Gordon) Terrace, BC, Barbara Merrill (Marc Lafortune) Gatineau, PQ, Darlene Merrill, London, ON, great-grandchildren Jake, Melani, Graeme, Owen, Nicola, Alexandre, Katrine, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She will be lovingly missed. Iris was predeceased by her husband of 51 years, who passed away in 1979. Born in the then small western town of Kelowna, BC. Iris enjoyed her early years in the Okanagan. She moved to Winnipeg to attend school in 1926 and as it turned out never to return to Kelowna except to visit her parents. She often said "I'm the only person I know who moved from Kelowna to Winnipeg." She initially attended St. Mary's Academy and completed her education at Wesley College where she met her future husband Eric. A session at Success Business College and then marriage in June 1928. Iris raised two children Richard and Glenda. Richard and his family left Winnipeg in 1959 thus denying Iris the need of a loving grandmother to be close. Family was very important to Iris so visiting was a regular event. Iris enjoyed a 25 year career with the Winnipeg Free Press. She was an active and supportive member of Oxford United Church prior to its closing and she enjoyed regular coffee sessions and weekly bridge afternoons, with friends. She shared her home with Glenda who contributed to Iris' good health and well being. The need for more help than Glenda could provide forced the issue and Iris was accepted at the Convalescent Home of Winnipeg July 1, 2010. The family wishes to thank the 3rd floor staff at the Convalescent Home for the care, comfort and compassion afforded Iris during her stay with them. Should friends so desire, a donation could be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society or a charity of their choice. A private, family graveside service will be held at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens at a later date. In our hearts your memory is kept To have to cherish and never forget.
