ELIZABETH LUCILLE JOHNSTON March 25, 1930 - May 20, 2013 Peacefully on May 20, Elizabeth (Betty) passed away at the Charleswood Care Centre. She is survived by her only child Cynthia and husband Court Solimka. Betty was predeceased by her husband William (Bill) Johnston in 1988. Mom grew up in the North End making many lifelong friendships. She had a classically trained coloratura soprano voice, winning scholarships to study in Europe. Betty chose to marry Bill instead! They moved to St. Vital living on Moore Avenue for 52 years. Mom had a great sarcastic sense of humour, a quick wit and never turned down an invitation to party. Sadly mom became a recluse after Dad died in 1988. Her advancing Geriatric Dementia forced her to move to the Charleswood Care Centre in January 2013. She said she should have moved there years ago! The care, tenderness and compassion of the staff was truly outstanding. In her final days, her nurse Dena and aid Abeba were amazing. Her funeral service will be Saturday, June 1, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. Voyage Funeral Home, 1073 St. Mary's Road (Evangel Chapel) 204-284-7500. Father Michael Wollbaum officiating.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Betty was a special dear friend of ours for over half a century. She was a vivacious charming gal, full of wit and a unique sense of humour, never a dull moment when in her company. She had a special way of making you feel comfortable and important when you were down and out. We cherish the many memories of the times we spent with Bill and Betty at their cottage, our home and theirs. We feel blessed to have had the pleasure of sharing our lives with Betty and Bill real genuine friends. Our deepest sympathy to Cindy and Court. All our love PAUL AND GRACE NEDOKIS - Posted by: ELIZABETH JOHNSTON (best friend) on: May 29, 2013

  • We have very many fond memories of Betty. Whether it was stopping over during a walk to say hi; dinners at my folks, or times spent at their cottage in Winnipeg Beach. Her wit, her tell it like it is attitude and her contagious laugher drew us to her and made us respect her. We will definitely miss Betty. Our thoughts are with you Cynthia and Court. - Posted by: Karen (Nedokis) and Larry Lockhart (Friend of the Family) on: May 29, 2013
