SHARDABEN RAOJIBHAI PATEL Sharda Patel passed away peacefully on May 30, 2013, surrounded by her family. Shardaben was the beloved mother of Leena, Ila, Makrand, Arvind (Carol), and Aparna, grandmother of Sita (David) and Kiran (Shannon), great-grandmother of Sophia and Cole. Shardaben was a rare spirit. Anyone who knew her, whether for 10 minutes or 40 years, fell in love with her. She was kind, and playful, with an infectious giggle and a gracious charm. Born in 1922 in Kisumu (Kenya), Shardaben spent her early childhood with her grandmother in Nar (India), where she was the only girl enrolled at the village school. She later moved back to East Africa - first to Pemba with her parents, and later to Zanzibar with her husband, Raojibhai. After having five children, she fulfilled her dream of completing a law degree in India, where she lived independently for several years before returning to her family life. Shardaben and Raojibhai left their home after the revolution in Zanzibar in 1964, and eventually emigrated to Canada in 1981 to join their children. A service celebrating Shardaben's life will take place at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, June 2, 2013 at Thomson "In the Park" Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to a charity of one's choice.
