Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJOHN DONALD CAMPBELL October 1, 1920 - May 26, 2013 It is with great sadness that we announce the death of John Campbell on Sunday, May 26, 2013 at the age of 92. John was predeceased by his parents, Murdo and Dolina, his loving wife Helen, son-in-law Clinton Grove, sister Isabel and brothers Duncan, Allan and Donald. John is survived and will be missed by his daughter Heather Grove, son David, daughter-in-law Teresa, grandchildren Heather, Elaine (Tyler), Jennifer and Stephen as well as his brother William (Margaret) and numerous nephews and nieces. John attended school in St. James and would joke that he went to school "only one day when his brother was sick". At the young age of 18 John traveled west to Vancouver where he joined the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada at the beginning of the Second World War. He courageously served overseas in Europe for six years. Returning from the war, John met the love of his life, Helen Estok. They married on August 17, 1945 and together built a loving home where they raised their two children. John served for many years as an elder for First Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the Millennium Lodge of the Freemasons and of Jephthah Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star where he served as Worthy Patron for several terms. John worked in the brewery industry as a truck driver and fork lift operator for over 40 years. He retired in 1985, the same month that he celebrated the birth of his first two grandchildren. He embraced this second career as a loving and attentive Grandpa. Retirement also gave John more time for his favourite hobby, golfing with buddies at Kildonan Golf Course. Family was very important to John. He cared for his children, grandchildren and became a wonderful caregiver for Helen, as her health declined. She taught him to cook, and he hosted many Saturday night gatherings with the Campbell Clan, where he skillfully prepared delicious roast beef dinners, always preceded by "a wee dram". Family would like to thank the staff of Calvary Place Personal Care Home, where John lived for the past two and a half years, for their excellent care and support. A service celebrating John's life will be held on Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at First Presbyterian Church, 61 Picardy Place at 11:00 a.m. In honour of John's memory, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Society of Manitoba in compassion for those who live with dementia. John was a sweet man who always looked out for the young guys. Now that I'm the "old guy" I try to follow his example. John was also a dear friend with my late father and they had lots of laughs together. - Posted by: Bill Wright (Co-worker) on: Dec 19, 2013

John I had the honour of meeting you when I did my practicum at Calvary Place. I have been a friend of your son David since we met in High School. I have a lot of fond positive memories of our short time together. May you rest in peace. Condolences to all those that you have left behind. You will be truly missed by so very many. Until our paths cross again. - Posted by: Marilyn "Mouse" Fraser (friend, caregiver) on: Jun 06, 2013

I played golf with John and Tom and Don (his co-workers at Carlings and ABD) for more than a dozen years and always looked forward to our Saturday golf game at Kildonan and the stories he would tell during the waits on the tee boxes!!! - Posted by: Bob Nichols (Friend & Golfing Partner from Kildonan Golf Course) on: Jun 02, 2013
