RAYMOND BRYAN DEWSON Died quietly on June 2, 2013, at the age of 90, at Concordia Place in Winnipeg. Predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Joan Elizabeth Dewson (nee White), his parents Richard and Emily (nee Campleman) Dewson, and sisters Vida and Constance. Survived by his sister Frieda. Raymond will be greatly missed by his four children: Michael (Ann), Bryan (Nancy), Mark (Cheryl), and Valerie. Poppa is remembered with love by his five grandchildren: Frank and Vanessa (James), Michelle, Jana-Rae (Adam) and Lyndon (Assunta); and by his five great-grandchildren, Alexandra, Carter, Amelia, Lucas, and Benjamin. Also missed by Monique Lamarche. Ray was born on September 3, 1922 in Hull, East Yorkshire, UK. In the Second World War Ray joined the R.A.F. to serve as pilot and instructor. He flew everything from Tiger Moths to deHavilland Mosquitos, and had missions as far afield as Egypt and Pakistan. A posting in Canada with the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan led to his meeting Joan. By the end of the war they were married and returned to Edmonton to start a family and Ray's long career in the insurance business. In 1959 the family moved to Winnipeg where he enjoyed a 30 year career with James Richardson & Sons, Ltd. Ray was a lovely human being who contributed much to his family and community. All Ray's life he never missed an opportunity to pitch in and help. He played leadership roles in numerous organizations including the United Church, YMCA, Freemasons, Manitoba Chamber Orchestra, Forum Art Gallery, Dugald Costume Museum, Manitoba Historical Society, and Manitoba Arts Council. Among his proudest achievements were building Camp Maskepetoon at Pigeon Lake, AB, and inspiring record numbers to become Queen Scouts during his years as troop leader of the 40th. Ray was actively involved with Joan's and his children's lives, supporting them in their artistic, academic, sporting, gardening, and home renovation projects. It seems there was never a time when the Dewson household did not have cats and dogs. An old friend once said of Ray, "If I could come back to Earth, I would want to be Ray Dewson's dog". His was a life well lived. The family thanks the kind staff at Concordia Place who took such good care of Dad. By Ray's request, there will be no funeral. However, the family will gather this summer at Trout Lake, a cherished spot, for a celebration of his life. In lieu of flowers, please commit a random act of kindness in Ray's memory.

  • My Grandfather was one of the kindest people I ever met. I wish I had lived closer so I could have seen him more often. It was so sad to see him slip in the last few years much like my grandmother before him but he had a wonderful life and I am a better person for having had him in my life. - Posted by: Vanessa Dewson (Granddaughter) on: Jun 06, 2013

  • Ray was my neighbour for many years and a better one you will never find. I still remember every morning and evening when he would take our dog Buddy and his Susan for a long walk. Every so often I would go over to his place after supper and we would sit in the kitchen and have long talks about anything and everything. I visited him often over the past few years at his various nursing homes etc. It was so sad to see him sliding down the bannister of life. It brought tears to my eyes, even at this writing. In another way I am happy for him as I know he is with his beloved wife Joan. REST IN PEACE MY FRIEND - Posted by: Robert Chilton (Neighbour) on: Jun 04, 2013
