DAVID JEFF (DAVE) ELIAS July 19, 1969 - June 5, 2013 It is with the greatest sadness that we announce the passing of Dave Elias on June 5, 2013. Dave, beloved husband, father, brother and son, passed away at the age of 43. Aside from his wife Sue, he is survived by his 12 year old daughter Mackenzie and 7 year old son Nicholas. He also leaves to mourn his passing his father Art, wife Val and Val's daughters Sherri (Gerald) and Kirsten (Charles), as well as his very best friend and brother Colin and wife Kyla ("Kayla"), and their children Taylor 14, Katy 14, Ashton 12, and Ethan 5; also Sue's family: her parents Bill and Dolores Prociuk, brothers Jeff (Jessica, Brent, Carissa), Brad and Lynele Prociuk (Spencer and Simon), Ron, and sister Jodie and Ernie Sheppard (Stephanie), and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. His mother Irene, who he very much loved and was so close to, predeceased Dave on December 20, 2006. Dave grew up and went to school in Transcona, graduating high school in 1987. During that time Dave enjoyed playing baseball, long distance running and started his curling career. Curling became his passion. That passion continued throughout his life, from a successful junior career to one of the most successful men's curling careers in Manitoba. In addition to countless trips to the provincial championships, Dave played in the 2002 and 2005 National Championships representing Manitoba, following his mother's footsteps and her 1999 Manitoba Seniors Provincial Championship. Recent oh-so-true quotes include: " of the greatest curling minds in history; it was an honour to play with him."; "Always great with the media and with fellow competitors." As important as curling was to him, nothing was more important to Dave than his family. Dave and Sue recently celebrated their 15th wedding anniversary. Sue was Dave's "rock". Dave enjoyed family vacations, time at the lake, fishing or sitting by the campfire with his wife and two children. Dave and his brother Colin were known for their "silly language" (making up their own words) which ended up being a tag team on whoever was within earshot. But if there was one thing he loved most, it was spending time with his wife Sue, which often involved trips to Vegas. As competitive and intense as he was on a sheet of curling ice, Dave was considerate, respectful, fair-minded, empathetic, fun loving, and was always ready with that great smile of his. He was joking and trying to make the people around him comfortable to his very end. We've lost a genuinely beautiful person. A special thank you to Dr. James Johnston of CancerCare Manitoba for his unselfish, caring help in Dave's time of greatest need, as well as to Dr. Gary Harding, also of CancerCare. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation in Dave's name to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9, or at For those of you who knew Dave and loved him we ask that you attend a celebration of his life on Monday, June 10 at 2:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel located at 1442 Main Street, Winnipeg. • Dave is going to be missed by everyone who knew him. My condolences go out to his Family especially His wife, Daughter and Son. One thing Dave will leave with everyone is a legacy of compassion and laughter. Dave was such a good man! That truly is something to cherish and leave comfort for his kids that Dave was an amazing guy! I had the pleasure of curling competitive with Dave one season and I enjoyed every game with him. Off the ice all Dave did was laugh and say hello to everyone who walked by, even if he didn't know them. Again my thoughts and prayers go out to his family and close friends such as Chris Souchy and Hub Perrin. Remember the good times! Dave wouldn't want anyone getting too down. He will see us all again in the Big Rink upstairs and will have the beer already waiting on the table! I will miss seeing you at the rink Big Guy! - Posted by: Pat McCallum (Friend) on: Jun 08, 2013
