JOHN LEATHERDALE With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of John on May 26, 2013 at his home. John was born on April 24, 1944 in Washington, DC. John grew up in Winnipeg of parents Vern and Leonida. He married Bev Machdanz of St. Norbert on November 25, 1967 and had one daughter Kim. They moved to Portage in 1977 and worked as a Snap On tool dealer and mechanic until he retired. From the time he could pick up a wrench he loved to spend his time working on cars. In his early years he was an active member of the Winnipeg Sports Car Club racing cars up at Gimli where he worked as a starter for the race track. He was a recent member of the Winnipeg wandering wheels camping club which took up all his time in the summer months. He could always be seen walking his beloved dog Taya around the block many times in a day, talking to anyone who would take the time to stop and chat. Left to cherish his memory are his daughter Kim, sisters: Diane, Verna and Carolyn. Extended family: Darlene, Lindsay, Chris. John was predeceased by his wife Bev, parents Leonida and Vern, and brother Wayne. Funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 13, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. in the Herman Prior Centre, 40 Royal Road N., Portage la Prairie, MB with a reception to follow. Interment to follow at 3:30 p.m. for family and close friends at Evergreen Memorial Gardens. Arrangements entrusted to RONALD MOFFIT MEMORIAL SERVICES. (204) 856-3487

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • My deepest sympathies to you, Kim. Some of my fondest memories are of visiting you, Uncle John and Auntie Bev: and your dog Pebbles. I always listened wide-eyed to your Dad's grand tales, and thought he was a fantastic story-teller. He was a rare gem, indeed. My love and hugs... - Posted by: Tara-Lyn Hrynyk Goodall (Niece) on: Jun 11, 2013

  • Met John through my husband's business. He was always jovial and you could tell he liked his job. He was very proud that he had gotten his teacher certificate for power mechanics. Condolences to the family - Posted by: Jocelyne G. Durand (community member) on: Jun 11, 2013
