RONALD J. RIDDELL It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Ronald J. Riddell on June 12, 2013, at Lake of the Woods District Hospital. Ron was a loving husband to Helen; devoted father to Heather, Laurie, Curtis, Mark (Laurie); dedicated grandfather to Jason (Kristin), Doone (James), Brenton, Alex; and caring friend to his extended family, Nancy, Petra, Duane, and Cleo. He was predeceased by sister Edna and is survived by sisters Enid and Jean, brothers-in-law Russell (Alice), Louis (Elsie), Donald (Pam), and their families. Ron, son of Ivy (Basset) and J. Edgar Riddell, was raised in Warren, MB where he and Helen Hrynyk of Hazelridge, MB established their first home in 1951. In 1965, he and Helen relocated their family to the Sturgeon Creek community in Winnipeg. After a brief association with his father's business, he began a long teaching career in Baldur, MB which continued at Warren, Winnipeg Technical-Vocational High School, United College (Winnipeg), and in the Faculty of Arts and Science and The Collegiate at the University of Winnipeg, where he also served as Assistant to the President. His retirement years were happily spent at Black Sturgeon Lake in Kenora. Cremation has taken place, and a service in his memory will be held at 1:00 p.m., Sunday, June 23, 2013 at Knox United Church, Kenora, ON. An interment memorial service will follow in late summer in Warren, MB. A heartfelt thanks to the dedicated staff at the Lake of the Woods District Hospital for their care and compassion. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice.

  • I was deeply saddened by the news of Ron's passing. I came to know Ron as a colleague when I taught Grade XII English in the 1963 United College Collegiate Summer School Session. When I joined the University of Winnipeg English Department in 1968, Ron was there to welcome me home again.   • Ron was one of the first people that I met on my arrival at UW in 1977. He was always helpful and supportive. I saw him often in Kenora after he had retired as he was a frequent audience member at our band's performances on the waterfront.
