BERNICE ELVA SIMMONS (nee WALSH) With great sadness we announce the passing of our mother and grandmother, Elva, peacefully at Parkview Place in Winnipeg on Wednesday, June 5, 2013, at the age of 89 years. Elva is survived by her son Lloyd; grandson Lloyd (Dustin); nieces, Barbara Hughes, Rita Eyer, Patricia Walsh, Teresa Walsh, and Linda Walsh. She was predeceased by her infant sons, Joseph, and David Simmons; parents in-law Joe and Mabel Simmons, parents; husband Lloyd; siblings, James (Jim) Walsh, William (Bill) Walsh, and Barbara Watson. On July 13, 1923 Elva was born in Whitewater, MB to her parents John (Jack) and Violet Walsh (nee McCarthy). She was married in 1946 to Lloyd Alvin Simmons until his death in 1976. Elva had an interest in art all of her life, and her time at the lake. She was an active participant in women's curling here in Winnipeg and loved her trips to the world's championships. She had an interest in purebred, as well as, not so, purebred dogs. Elva enjoyed her friendships and valued her many acquaintances, throughout her life. She so enjoyed her involvement with her family, and extended family, as well as all of her many friends. In compliance with Elva's wishes a private family Interment will be held. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff or Parkview Place Personal Care Home for their wonderful care of Elva. In lieu of cards or flowers, please consider a donation to the Winnipeg Humane Society or the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba. Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • My brother, Joe Simmons, just found Aunt Elva's obituary. We are sorry to hear of her passing. Since our father, Walter Simmons, became ill and passed away, we had been out of touch. Aunt Elva was a very kind and generous woman. The last time I saw her my father and I stayed at their lovely home on the lake. I will never forget that visit. My thoughts are with my cousin Lloyd and his family at this time. - Posted by: Karen (Simmons) Hill-Silverman (Niece) on: Jan 24, 2014

  • WE WOULD VISIT MY AUNT AND UNCLE WHEN I WAS YOUNG AND STAY AT THE LAKE. IT WAS GOOD TIMES. NOW ALL OF JOSEPH AND MABEL'S CHILDREN AND SPOUSES ARE GONE. - Posted by: WALTER JOE SIMMONS (ELVA WAS MY AUNT) on: Jan 23, 2014

  • Elva was always so kind and generous to everyone in my family. Because my father had been the 'baby' in Elva's family, she enjoyed telling us stories about his mischievous pranks when he was a young boy. She also enjoyed (though perhaps sometimes with a bit of concern) seeing the competitive interactions between her son, Lloyd, and her nieces. Yet another indication of her sense of humour and her humanity. You will be greatly missed, Elva. - Posted by: Barbara Hughes (Niece) on: Jun 19, 2013

  • I will always remember my Aunt Elva as someone who loved to laugh, read, paint, curl, skate and swim. She had incredible energy. I recall her regularly attending Rainbow Stage with one or more of her many friends, sporting a colourful dress and often a hat to match. Summer weekends were usually spent at her lovely cottage at Clearwater Bay. When her only sister Barbara married her beloved Bruce at the age of 52, Aunt Elva, two years younger and the Bridesmaid, smiled, giggled and waved her way down the aisle - probably to the dismay of the very solemn Priest but to the delight of the congregation. My sisters and I were very lucky indeed to have such a kind, generous and slightly kooky Aunt. She is dearly missed, though we all have many happy memories of times spent with her. - Posted by: Teresa Walsh (Niece) on: Jun 18, 2013

  • Elva was a famous blueberry picker, exercise clubber, and stitch and bitchr at clearwater bay while Loyd and our gang swam, sailed and enjoyed the summers.... I fondly remember going in to Simmons Rentals, she was always the first to say hello and chat...Elva was always nice to me and I will remember her fondly. My condolences to Lloydy and Dustin ... the Moss family kelly moss - Posted by: kelly moss (friend for 60 years ! ) on: Jun 16, 2013
