RODERICK WILLIAM BUSHIE December 19, 1952 June 14, 2013 After a short battle with cancer, Rod peacefully passed into the spirit world at the Selkirk & District General Hospital, surrounded by family and friends. He leaves behind his best friend and loving wife Eileen, sons Hjortur and Ivar Helgason, grandsons Rain Anton and Tristan Alexander Helgason, sister Emma Bushie, brother Adolphus Bushie, sister Lena Bird (Edgar), Allan Bushie (Lillian), Alice Bushie, Vernon Bushie (Myrna), Connie Fontaine (Donovan), Elma Aurthurson (Sheldon), numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews and countless friends and acquaintances. Rod was born and educated in Hollow Water, leaving to further his education and work in Winnipeg, but returned to Hollow Water and to begin his political life. He was a Band Councillor of his reserve for four years, and Chief for 18 years and Grand Chief of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs for three years. Rod was always respectful of the Elders of his community, and had a great interest in the future of the youth. He always managed to find sponsors or extra funding for trips for the Elders and sports events for the youth. He encouraged young people to finish high school and not be afraid to leave the reserve to further their education and life experience. Rod fell in love with his grandchildren the moment he held them in his arms shortly after their birth, and he enjoyed their company every time they came to visit. As soon as the boys came into the house they ran to find "papa". His passing will leave a huge gap in their lives that he would have filled with love, laughter and adventure. Many of us only have a few of what we would call "close friends", but Rod had so many that only he could keep track of them. He was a generous man, with a good heart and deep feelings for the well-being of his people and the future of all First Nations. Rod worked for Jory Capital to increase the awareness among First Nations of investment and long term financial planning. His latest employment was with San Gold, gold mine who have a very high employment and retention rate of First Nation people. Many thanks to San Gold for their compassion through Rod's illness. The family would like to thank the staff at Selkirk & District General Hospital for their kind and compassionate care and going out of their way to accommodate the huge number of Rod's family and friends who stayed with him or came to visit him in his last hours. A Celebration of his life will take place at the Gilbart Funeral Home, at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 18, 2013, lunch to follow at the Legion, after which he will be taken home to Hollow Water, for a wake service Tuesday night at Alice's home and a traditional funeral at the Hollow Water Band Hall on Wednesday, June 19, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. If friends so desire, donations in Rod's memory can be made to CancerCare Manitoba. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements. www.gilbartfuneralhome.com
