GEORGE MEYERS It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father and Zaida, George Meyers on June 20, 2013. George is survived by his wife Barbara, sister Sophie, children Lyall (Darcie), Neil, and Mark (Deborah), and grandchildren Ariana (Kirk), Michael, Laura, and Jessica. George was the founder and owner of Meyers Drug Store in Winnipeg. He was a lifetime member of the Pharmacy Association of Manitoba, continuing to practice pharmacy at his drug store well into his 80s. George was an avid coin and gold collector. As a young girl, Zaida took me ice-skating to River Heights Community Centre. In later years, he attended my debating competitions with pride. George also had an incredibly close relationship with Kirk, he attended Kirk's hockey games and was his biggest fan. George wasn't George without the love of his life Barbara, or as he called her, his "Barbie". Barbara and George enjoyed many wonderful Hawaiian cruise vacations. They were always out on the town, visiting their favourite restaurants and casinos, sharing good times with their friends. George loved all of these outings that his manager', as he also affectionately referred to Barbara as, would arrange for them. Managed she did, Barbara was George's one and only caretaker, with no help from anyone else. People could simply not believe that he was 96 years old. Barbara's love for George was always first and foremost during their 28 year marriage. A funeral was held at the Shaarey Zedek Synagogue, officiated by Rabbi Green on June 21, 2013. Pallbearers were Dr. Grant Goldberg, Tamir Efron, Roey Efron, Kirk Knudsen, Wally Kane, and Chuck Narvey. We would like to thank Dr. Cavers and the nursing staff at the Victoria Hospital for making George comfortable during his last few days. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a charity of your choice. We miss and love you very much Zaida.

  • All of the Skinner family remember George or as he was referred to by my dad..."Georgie". Georgie & my dad played hookey in grade 1 in Selkirk & we were fortunate to have him & his wife, Barbara at my parents' 60th anniversary in 2003 at Lester Beach. We have a great video of George & my dad coming out of the water after a swim in Lake Winnipeg. Our family still talks about George & his brother "Dave" & we love those stories.
