I met Kathy at the Running Room. We walked together and in a group through rain and snow, preparing for the Half Marathon. Kathy and I had many laughs as we solved the world's problems in a 5 or 10km walk Wed. evenings or Sunday mornings. Being a newcomer to Winnipeg (military) Kathy taught me much of the history and newsworthy items of the city. Through Kathy, I began to feel at home in Winnipeg, not just a short term transient. She was an advocate for the city. Many of the people who have posted here I feel I nearly know because I heard so many of the names in our discussions. Kathy was very proud of the achievements of particular nephews. When I moved away, we kept in touch by email. We always met for dinner when I returned to town to do some Airforce business. I encouraged Kathy to enjoy travel and was pleased she made it on a cruise to Greece and the Med. Kathy was disgruntled with the start of 2013 and it sounded like she had some challenges ahead of her. Kathy always emailed me on my birthday to wish me well. Strangely, I did not hear from her in Nov./13. As I prepared my email to recognize her birthday for Feb/2014 her emails bounced back, something I did not anticipate. A quick google has left me in shock and tearful. To Kathy's family and friends, I am so sorry for your loss. Kathy, thanks for being a friend and an ear when I needed one. You were always a reliable and decent friend. I will miss you when I return for duties in Wpg. Your marathon ended way too soon. I worked with Kathy in the 1980's and never met anyone so tireless and full of enthusiasm for anything that she set her mind to. She was my mentor and I'll not forget her. My sincerest sympathies to her family. - Posted by: Karen Isleifson Buechler (co-worker) on: Jul 30, 2013

Kathy and I spent wonderful times in deep discussions on Earl's patios and a number of sushi bars. When Kathy retired from MTS, we still continued to have our patio meeting to discuss her next vacation adventure. I will miss having our discussions and the laughs that followed. You will be forever in my thoughts. - Posted by: Dornel Collison (Co-worker and Friend) on: Jul 07, 2013

I first met Kathy when the new “electric” typewriters with form letters were given out to MTS administrative secretaries. Kathy came out to Brandon to train me. I talked to her on the phone and she was always there for me when I needed help. We met again when I moved to Winnipeg and she would always stop to chat. Her smile was contagious. I was shocked when a co-worker sent me the news of her passing. Hence, the saying, “Only the good die young!” Kathy will be missed by many. My deepest sympathy goes out to the family. - Posted by: Marilyn Lantz (An MTS friend) on: Jul 03, 2013

Kathy was a great mentor. I joined the Running Room in the fall of 2003 and in the spring of 2005 I was part of her training group for the Manitoba Marathon 1/2. I ended up completing 5 1/2 marathons in 13 months all due to Kathy's energy and motivation. My sincere condolences go out to all her family and friends at this difficult time. - Posted by: Savellia (Sid) Love (Friend) on: Jul 03, 2013

Kathy taught me how to fold cloth napkins into works of art. We never spent very much tine together but I always respected how she took a shining to my younger brother Kierin and went out of her way to let him know he was welcome and valued. What a shock to hear about this today. So glad that she got to enjoy her condo renovations. Kathy did it her way and you can hear her voice as you read the obituary. I met Kathy in 2005 she was the volunteer trainer at the Running Room and was training us to be ready for our first Manitoba marathon (half). She tirelessly and unselfishly booted us into shape 3 times a week as we pounded the pavement. Encouraging us all the way. Two days before the marathon she told us that she wasn't in it. We assumed she would be there with us, but no - she was going to be there at the end, cheering for us, and she was. It was all about our group and each one of us. That was Kathy. I'm proud and glad to have had Kathy as a friend. - Posted by: Morgan Willacy Comrie (Friend and mentor) on: Jul 02, 2013
