Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJAMES (TED) EDWARD BICKNELL Ted, born in Brandon, Manitoba, March 21, 1940, left us peacefully on June 29, 2013 at Riverview Health Centre, where he had been admitted only four days earlier. Ted leaves behind a loving wife Mary Ann (nee Ostash), his sons Karl and Justin, grandson Carter, brothers Ken and Terry (Judy) and brother-in-law Harvey (Betty) Ostash. He will also be lovingly remembered by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins in both Ted and Mary Ann's family. Ted was predeceased by his parents Ozzie and Madge Bicknell; parents-in-law Peter and Mary Ostash; daughter (in infancy) Kara Ann; sister Iris (Len) Souliere; sisters Marguerite Bicknell, Noreen Bicknell, Madeleine Bicknell and Joan James and sister-in-law Vivianne Bicknell. Ted spent his childhood living in Brandon, Manitoba. He studied Theology at St. Peter's Seminary at the University of Western Ontario in London, ON and on his Christmas vacations he enjoyed playing with the Brandon Wheat Kings. After leaving the priesthood, Ted studied at Loyola University in Chicago, obtaining his Master's Degree in Counselling Psychology. He then worked as a counsellor and administrator at St. Clair College in Windsor, Ontario. During this time, Ted and Mary Ann married and started their family. He returned to Winnipeg in 1981 to enter into the Boston Pizza business with his brothers where he continued until his retirement six years ago. The center of Ted's life has always been his family, friends and community. Ted was a very special man who showed all of us how to be full of life, laughter, prayer, insight, courage and compassion. He was extremely loved and respected by all who had the opportunity and privilege to meet him. Throughout all of Ted's life, he was an avid athlete; enjoying hockey, golf, biking and hiking. A special thank you to the staff of 3East at the Riverview Health Centre for their care and compassion. Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 6, 2013 at St. Timothy's Roman Catholic Church, 135 John Forsyth Road. Interment of his cremated remains will take place at a later date. We have often thought back to our lives when living on Woodbury Drive and the wonderful neighbours we knew at that time. My husband (Harry) and I remember you two. I used to be Pat Kerr (David). Dear Mary Ann and family...I was so shocked and sad to hear of Ted's passing. I have many fond memories of our times at Boston Pizza on Pembina with the entire friday night gang. I`ve known the bicknell`s for almost 15 yrs. Ted only for about 10, but knowing Ted this amount of time has been uplifting, loving and informative. I worked for Ted at the BP on Pembina and have stayed with the company intermittently since, striving to be a Manager, a friend, a father, and of course a good man such as Ted couldn`t help to be. No one is perfect but Ted came the closest I`ve ever met. He was an ICONIC person and will always be remembered. My love, respect and admiration go out to you Ted and of course to Mary-Anne, Justin, Karl and the rest of the Bicknell family, my condolences! - Posted by: Joel Malmo (Friend and Mentor) on: Jul 11, 2013

Dear Mary Ann and Family I was so saddened to hear of Ted's passing. I have such fond memories of Boston Pizza and how Ted would pass around a tray of champagne to celebrate birthdays. He took such joy in making people happy. I also remember fun times in Arizona when you both came to visit. I hope your memories of Ted will be of comfort to you. Mary Ann, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this time. Both you and Ted welcomed me with open arms when I joined the BP family almost 14 years ago. Your love and respect for each other have forever made an impact on me. Ted's generous and gentle nature will continue to live on through all those lives he touched. - Posted by: Anna Bedard (nee Lawrence) (Boston Pizza Family) on: Jul 09, 2013

Ted was a favorite cousin. I still recall the summer family visits in the 50's when our Moms (sisters) would get us together, either in Brandon or Saskatoon. Hanging out with the cousins (the twins and those wonderful sisters) and my older brothers was always an adventure for a kid looking for people to look up to and have fun with. My condolances to Mary Ann, sons, brothers Terry and Ken and all the Bicknell family. God bless you all. May Ted rest in peace. Cousin Ray - Posted by: Ray Stensrud (Cousin) on: Jul 09, 2013

Mary Ann and Sons, we were so saddened to read of Ted's passing. Our family started to go to Boston Pizza shortly after Ted became Manager and continued to do so all through his career. He was the epitome of the word "Gentleman" and loved his family very deeply. The personal interest he took in his staff earned him the upmost respect. Friday nights and every occasion in our lives from birthdays, anniversaries right up to wedding rehearsals were spent at Boston Pizza. Mary Ann, both you and Ted always made us feel so special, you had that way with people. We know how much you are going to miss him. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. I am so sad for the passing of Uncle Ted and I am so sorry I could not be at the celebration of his death. Ted to me was the definition of what a Uncle is Kind, Gentle, Spiritual and most of all funny. I have many good memories of him when I was a child as well in my adult years. I'm sure he is in heaven now and there to greet him upon his arrival are his Mother and Father, my Mother (Iris), my Father(Len), his sisters Muggy, Noreen, Joan, Madeleine and sister-in-law Vivian and all those that have passed on. I will miss you, but I know one day we will see each other again. My Love, Prayers and thoughts go out to those left behind especially Mary Ann, Karl and Justin - Posted by: Mark Souliere (Nephew) on: Jul 06, 2013

The first time I met Ted was at Mark's mom's (Iris) is funeral. I talked to him for quite al ong time and he gave me so much wisdom and understanding about life and how to accept and forgive, these were words I already knew... That night though he changed my life for the better. I knew I had been blessed to meet an angel on earth and forever I will be blessed and thankful. I also had the blessing of meeting his wife Mary Ann and felt that God had brought two angels together. I told Mark that night of his mother's funeral that I just met two angels and they are here on earth... Ted and Mary Ann . Well now Ted is in heaven and I think heaven will be a better place because he is there. I will miss the chance to get to know you better ... Really though I think I was blessed every momemnt I had with him and Mary Ann. Thanks so much for touching so many people with your gentle, kind loving heart. my prayers and thoughts go out to you Mary Ann and your whole family. I know Ted is in a good place with loving arms around him. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. Dear Mary Ann, Justin & Karl, My heartfelt prayers go out to all of you. As the previous tributes here and at Mass this morning can attest, Ted was so well loved. I want to thank both of you for the encouragement you gave to my boys while they were employed at BP. Thanks also for helping to promote the relationship between Mike & Krista. Just a brief story about an incident last year; I was in the church office discussing with the staff my concern about some of the changes coming about and that we couldn't keep up with things already set in place. Ted was there doing something for the S.S.V.P. when he said to me; "Bev, don't sweat the small stuff." That was Ted, more concerned about what really mattered-caring for others. I hope I never forget his wise words. Love to you all, Bev - Posted by: Bev Martens (friend) on: Jul 06, 2013

Ted was my mother Lorna's cousin. When he was assistant pastor at St Edwards in the early 1960s he would often join our family for Sunday dinner. One Sunday in 1965 he invited me to come with him to a CYO evening. There I met Margaret Balcaen (we were both 17) and four years later he officiated at our wedding. (Back in those days the average age of marriage really was 21!). Forty Four years, two children, and four grandchildren (almost five) later we are happily together. No event in our lives was more significant than Ted's nudge for me to join him that eventful night in 1965. He was a man of great force and peace who changed our lives forever. God Bless. - Posted by: Angus Reid (Second cousin) on: Jul 04, 2013

I am so very sorry to learn of Ted's passing. He was truly a wonderful man. He was my boss, and friend during my 20's when I worked at Boston Pizza. I know I can speak for other past BP employees when I say that we often felt like an extension of the Bicknell Family when working there. I would see Ted and Mary Ann over the years intermittently as I attended University, got married and had my own children. Years would pass but when Ted saw me he greeted me with a smile and a hug and some good genuine conversation. I am so VERY fond of my time at BP and for having known such a wonderful man. My heart goes out to Mary Ann and family during this time of sadness. I offer my deepest condolences. - Posted by: Jennifer Busch (Kennedy) ( Friend) on: Jul 04, 2013

We are so sorry to hear of Ted's passing. When Ted, along with his dear wife Mary Ann owned and managed the Boston Pizza on Pembina, they welcomed us along with many others not just as customers, but as friends. Over the years, many wonderful lifelong friendships were formed there and Ted and Mary Ann with their welcoming hearts were the reason why. Doug and I were so lucky to have personally been at the receiving end of Ted's compassion, kindness, laughter, patience and spirituality for many years and we will remember him always. We know that he is now at peace and in God's loving hands. Our deepest sympathy goes out to Mary Ann, Karl, Justin and all their families. - Posted by: Norma and Doug Carswell (Friends and patrons) on: Jul 04, 2013

I am sorry to hear of Ted's passing. In the early days of Boston pizza I met Ted and family. Then through some of the annual musicals at St. Timothy's Ted would be there, tux and all.
