STELLA ANNETTE JOHNSON April 30, 1930 July 3, 2013 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Stella Johnson on July 3, 2013 at the Gimli Community Health Centre in Gimli, Manitoba. A beloved wife, sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, she passed away with loved ones by her side after a courageous battle with cancer. Stella is survived by her husband Jonas, sons Brian Sackney (Karon), Randy Sackney, and Bjorn Johnson, her grandchildren Carla, Paul, Kristjan, Daniel, Skip and Grant (Pam) and great-grandchildren Anna, Katya, Lily, Austin, Ehren and Jade, sisters Anne, Marie and Nellie, and brothers Raymond (Doreen) and John (Angie). Stella was predeceased by her parents Alex and Jennie, brother Bill, sister Gladys, stepdaughter Judy, and daughters-in-law Debbie and Heather. Born in Angusville, Manitoba, Stella attended school In Lakedale and Angusville. She went on to teach in a one room schoolhouse west of Angusville. Stella married Peter Sackney in 1950 and they welcomed sons Brian in 1951 and Randy in 1954. The family moved to Brandon, Manitoba, where Stella worked as a Nurse's Aid at the Assiniboine Hospital. After being widowed, Stella married Jonas in 1970, moving to Gimli, Manitoba, where they raised their son Bjorn, born in 1971. Stella Annette Johnson was a woman of strong faith and dedication to her church. She sang in the choir and often helped in the selection of hymns. A gifted cook, her lovingly prepared dishes were cherished and enjoyed by family and friends. Stella was an artist, and her paintings hang on the walls throughout her Gimli home. One of her favourite pastimes involved challenging her mind with crossword puzzles and cryptoquotes from the daily newspaper. She was an enthusiastic reader, and particularly enjoyed biographies of people of all walks of life. An avid gardener, Stella loved growing flowers and vegetables, and had an enviable "green thumb" with houseplants of all varieties. Most of all, Stella will be remembered for her clever wit, warm smile, contagious laughter, and her loving spirit. An evening prayer service will be held at St. Michael's Catholic Church (113-7th Ave., Gimli) on Monday, July 8, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. A memorial service will be held at St. Michael's Church on Tuesday, July 9, at 2:00 p.m., with a luncheon to follow at Lakeview Resort (10 Centre St., Gimli).
