I first met "Scouter Ron" as one of my scout leaders in the early 1970s in 113th Scout Troop at Christ Lutheran Church. He took his responsibilities very seriously, but always with a "serious" sense of humour. Once we were playing basketball and I thought I had a breakaway opportunity to score a basket until, much to my chagrin, Ron came from behind to steal the ball and score his own basket. In March 1975 Ron called me to tell me fellow Scout Leader Jack Schnerch died at age 25 from galloping cancer. His funeral was also at Cropo and we scouts attended in full uniform to say good-bye. This was the first non-family funeral I ever attended. As a fellow member of Christ Lutheran Church, Ron and I maintained our scouting connection by sharing the scout handshake whenever we shared the peace during a worship service. I have a sense of things coming full circle, although far too soon, that it's now time to pay my last respects to a longtime scouting friend. May Ron rest in peace and may God grant his memory to be eternal. Sincerely, Howard R. Engel - Posted by: Howard R. Engel (longtime scouting friend) on: Jul 09, 2013
