HELEN ELSPIE CARTER (nee WALKER) January 27, 1922 - July 5, 2013 It is with great sadness that the family of Helen Carter announce her peaceful passing on Friday morning, July 5, 2013. She is finally reunited with her husband Walter who left us in December 1986. She was the last surviving member of nine children born to Elizabeth and John Walker. The end of an era. She is survived by her daughter Rainey (Stan); sons Tom (Linda), and Ted (Lesley); grandchildren: Geordie, Jillian, Krista (Wayne), Talia (Dave), Megan (Tyler) and Derek (Morgan), and great-grandson Rhys. She also leaves her brother-in-law Lou Ducharme of Seattle, Washington, many nieces, nephews, cousins, many children who call her "Grandma Helen", numerous friends, and her furry companion Roxy, who all loved her. As Lizzy was giving birth to her seventh child, she called out to the doctor, "here comes another one" and along came Helen. At three and one half pounds the doctor told her she wouldn't raise that child. Our grandma said, "we'll see about that". A story we've heard countless times! Mum was raised and attended school in the north end of Winnipeg graduating from St. John's High School. She was active in C.G.I.T., acrobatics, and was an all-around sport enthusiast. She met Walter, the love of her life, in high school and married him during the Second World War. While the men were overseas, she proudly worked at MacDonald Aircraft where she built airplanes and "taught men to be her supervisors". Years later, she worked part-time at Regency Coin and Stamp Co. After the birth of Rainey and Tom, Mum and Dad built their dream home in Rivercrest, West St. Paul where Ted was born a few years later. She was very active in the community particularly in the church where she was a Sunday School teacher, choir leader, and president of the U.C.W. At 80 years old she continued to volunteer for the Canadian Cancer Society as well as delivering Meals-on-Wheels to "the old" people. As a family, we took annual camping trips around Canada. The most memorable times were spent at the family cottage at Wade, ON where Mum had been going since she was four years old. It was also here that she taught us to swim and dive. She worked tirelessly beside Dad building the veranda on the cottage and performing continuous repairs and upkeep. In spite of her many medical and surgical set-backs, her strength of character prevailed and she never lost her faith. Funeral service will be held at Glen Eden Memorial Gardens, 4477 Main St., W. St. Paul, Thursday, July 11 at 10:00 a.m. We, the family, thank Home Care workers who were so devoted to Mum, particularly Heidi and Kim. Dr. Moncek, nurses, health care aides, and the staff on the fifth floor of Seven Oaks Hospital; she thought the world of you and we are all grateful for your care. We also thank the many relatives and friends who spent time visiting Mum during this final stage of her life. Flowers gratefully declined. Should you wish, donations may be made in Mum's memory to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Heart and Stroke Foundation. "Love You Forever"

Condolences & Memories (10 entries)

  • The first time I met Helen I just knew she was someone special and that I would grow to love her . Helen always said that she was glad that her day started with me, but to tell you the truth I think it was the other way around . The best part of working for HomeCare is meeting people like Helen and the blessing of having them in my life. The worst part is when you grow to love them so very much and then you lose them. Thank you Helen for all of your kindness and love, I only hope you knew how much I loved you! - Posted by: Kim Stoyko (HomeCare worker and friend ) on: Oct 14, 2013

  • I extend my heartfelt sympathy to the Carter family. I was seeply saddened to learn of dear Helen's passing. For more than 30 yrs Helen was committed to the Canadian Cancer Society's annual community canvass. I enjoyed our annual conversations and truly appreciated that Helen was a phone call and ready to coordinate the fundraising campaign in her area. Helen leaves a legacy of caring, compassion and commitment - cherish the memories of a special lady. - Posted by: Lynda Ruban (staff at the Canadian Cancer Society) on: Jul 10, 2013

  • Aunt Helen, many great memories of a very dear aunt. Times at the lake, corn roasts at Rivercrest and the extra time Ted & I spent with you caring for your yard. Lots of great conversations over tea when the work was done. You made the best crabapple jelly and blueberry pies. These memories will be with us for ever. May your heart always be joyful, May your song always be sung, And may you stay forever young. We love you and will keep you in our hearts forever, Heather & Ted - Posted by: Heather & Ted Mackereth (niece) on: Jul 09, 2013

  • Mrs. Carter was a cool parent to all of us girls growing up in West St. Paul. Always had a fun time at Rainey's house... Mrs. Carter was also a very prominent figure in the Rivercrest church helping my dad (Sandy Omand) with the choir. Walter and Helen's organizational skills and hard work put into our church gatherings always made them very special...They were two very Special People in the community. We extend our Kindest Regards and Love to Rainey and the family... Your sweet Mom will be missed Keep all the happy times in your heart and perhaps it won't seem too heavy In Love and Prayers Jan & Ken - Posted by: Jan & Ken Hocken (Long time friend of Rainey) on: Jul 09, 2013

  • I had the honor of working with Helen, Rainy and Jill @ Rivercrest United Church, during the last couple of years the church was open. I found Helen to be completely devoted to her church, her faith, her family and community. She was a pillar of the church and could share many stories of the events and celebrations held @ Rivercrest United. She will be missed by many. - Posted by: Karen Hutchinson Martin (Fellow Christian @ Rivercrest United) on: Jul 08, 2013
