ELIZABETH YAKMISSION (HICKMAN) -
Date of Passing: Jun 28, 2013
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryELIZABETH YAKMISSION (nee HICKMAN) 1932 - 2013 It is with sadness we announce the passing of our dear mother on June 28, 2013. Left to mourn are her three children, Jane (Stephen), Louise, Roger (Cindy); her beloved grandchildren: Sophie, Hugo, Nicholas, Matthew, Connor, Isabelle and Alec, and her best friend of 75 years, Jill Lewis. She is predeceased by both her parents and her husband. Mom was born in Winnipeg in 1932 and lived in River Heights her entire life. She was very proud of being a Winnipegger. She was a true prairie girl through and through. She attended Grosvenor School, Balmoral Ladies College and graduated from Kelvin in 1949. Mom went on to the University of Manitoba and completed law school in 1959 being one of the few women at that time to graduate from law in Manitoba. It was at University that she met our dad and love of her life Jacob whom she married in 1954 and shared her life with until his death in 1984. After marrying dad, and being an only child, she was welcomed into a large, extended family who schooled her in Ukrainian culture and cooking. Mom and dad made a wonderful life together with dad as a Principal and mom at home raising us. In 1962, they purchased a gorgeous lot in Lac du Bonnet where they built a cottage from the ground up. Many beautiful days and fond memories were made and shared at the lake. Mom loved travelling, going to the movies, trying new recipes, having a good laugh and the occasional stiff drink. Most of all she treasured time spent entertaining and being entertained by her friends and family. We would like to extend our sincere appreciation to our friends and family for their support at this difficult time and to the exceptional staff at St. Boniface Hospital Palliative Care Unit. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Jake Yakmission Memorial Scholarship, care of Seven Oaks Education Foundation, Seven Oaks School Division.

Dear Jane, Louise and Roger, so sorry to hear of the loss of your Mom. I remember many fun and happy times at the lake with you and your parents. A few years ago we were cleaning up a few things at the cabin and your mom stopped her car on the road and we enjoyed a chat with her. In July, my brother Ross and husband, Stan, bumped into Roger at the dump where Roger mentioned your Mom had passed. Mom(Diane Karbonik) was with us at the lake and we were saddened to hear of your loss. The lake was definitely a place your Mom loved to be. Enjoy the memories of your Mom and her life, well-lived.
